STORYLAND STUDIOS is Hiring a Junior Production Designer (UK Based) Near Elsinore, CA

Amersham, UK (In Office) - Reports To: Director of Creative Services

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Crafting Story

As the Junior Production Designer, you help to imagine, create, and develop “out-of-the-box” stories for our clients, strategic partners, charitable organizations, and industry influencers through your thought-provoking, enlightening and high-impact original art. You can immerse yourself in imagination and fantasy yet remain grounded enough to turn your dreaming into a reality. You believe that stories shape culture, connect people from all walks of life on an emotional level and ultimately change the world. You are constantly asking what’s the emotional response we want our audience to feel during the experience? What will bring them back again and again?

Connect the Dots

Alongside fellow creatives, producers and project managers, you help to ensure you’re all on the same page, that the consistency and integrity of the Big Idea and story you’re telling is at the forefront of everything produced. You’re not afraid to critically examine your work, make edits where they’re needed and put the pen down… even if it’s the greatest character, setting or plot that’s ever been put to paper. The heart of the story will always guide your process. You trust that your teammates will hold you accountable and vice versa. You know that when you are all aware of the goals, objectives, and expectations, you can come together to create magic.

Grow Forward

We’re hiring someone who will roll up their sleeves and add value on day one, but we also believe in the potential of every employee. Storyland and its sister studio, PlainJoe are involved in a tremendous breadth of project types; from spatial, architecture, production design, branding and digital. We want you to grow, we want you to have a growth mindset, and we’ll look to support that growth with the opportunity to work with industry veterans on a wide scope of projects across both of our brands.

WHAT SUCCESS WILL LOOK LIKE

For day-to-day success, you will …

  • Exhibit flexibility, kindness, and a willingness to learn. Yep, that’s the top of the list!
  • Support the Creative team to help conceptualize high-impact concept designs by sketching and visualizing ideas from scratch on a wide range of projects including spatial, branding, and digital work.
  • In partnership with the producer, carry responsibility for the project’s overall health and profitability, driving to successful delivery while ensuring the team has what they need to complete the work.
  • Understand that imitation is a form of flattery. You can effectively match the style that syncs up with a project or Art Directors personal style for effective and seamless touch-ups and final finishes.
  • Assist the Creative team whilst they cast the vision of the project through creative ideation, stewarding the integrity of the Story and Big Idea and find ways to seamlessly weave this into all aspects of work. I think we’ve said this before, but it’s an important, trust us…
  • You may not be a writer, but we hope you love story. You will occasionally support the development of a project’s narrative, whether that be a specific attraction, a whole Park Zone or a character’s catchphrase.
  • Act as Quality Assurance and Quality Control for Creative throughout a Project’s lifecycle from conception to delivery.
  • Provide occasional design support for business development, and marketing efforts. Such as imagining and creating collateral for Industry Events pre-fabrication (like our killer booth designs for IAAPA).
  • Get the opportunity to hone your presenting skills through sharing your ideas and concepts internally to your project team and other Storyland team members and leaders.
  • Oh and always reply to team communication in a timely manner, we’re global and we want to be considerate of others, by getting them what they need as quickly as we reasonably can. Even though this position sits within our UK Office and will collaborate occasionally with this team, you will be confident working across time zones with your primary team, organized and overseen by the Director of Creative Services (also your Line Manager!).
  • You’ll demonstrate an ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, with the confidence to multi-task and delegate as required.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE PARTY

Skills and Qualifications

  • A university degree, course or the equivalent experience working in a Design discipline; Graphic Design, Architecture, Industrial Design, Design Technology.
  • You have exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Bonus points for a sense of humor!
  • Ability to work well in an integrated, worldwide design team with multiple disciplines.
  • You’re comfortable working with cause and Christian faith-based clientele.
  • Great “design eye” and ability to develop new aesthetic looks for presentations and maintain those looks across complex design packages.
  • The ability to juggle… not physically (but if you can let us know)… to work across multiple projects, all with different moving parts and stages of development, confidently.
  • Strong familiarity with Google Suite, Canva, Mac platform, and Adobe Suite.
  • Will be able to occasionally produce full scale, photo-real/rendered artwork on conceptual designs.
  • You’ll be comfortable working in proximity to and on projects for our sister studio, PlainJoe, a brand that serve charitable causes and Christian faith-based nonprofits.
  • You see feedback as a means to growth, rather than criticism.
  • You love this whole themed entertainment industry thing!
  • You’re responsive in serving others and anticipate what’s next.

Desired Experience

Additional skills beyond graphic design and concept illustration for instance…

  • The technical ability to assist in the development of details to creatively integrate advanced technology in creative development, planning and scoping, models, drawing packages, and ultimately final execution.
  • A knack for 3D modeling with familiarity with SketchUp, Revit, or other 3D modeling software.
  • A keen eye and sharp mind for research, benchmarking and finding resources to solve almost any problem.
