A Brief Overview
Provides radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by Radiation Oncologist

Education Qualifications
  • Must have satisfactorily completed a 12 or 24 month Radiation Therapy Technology Program Required
Experience Qualifications
  • 1 year Experience in a major cancer center or equivalent field. Preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • Radiation Therapist - ARRT Required
  • Basic Life Support - BLS/RQI Required within 90 days of hire
What you will do
  • Works as a liaison between patient, radiation oncologist and other clinical staff. Including Completing daily warm up on machines to ensure they are working properly prior to radiation administration and reports concerns to physicist and radiation oncologist.
  • Acquire MV, KV, CBCT imaging of patient per directions of Radiation Oncologist to determine the exact location of the area requiring treatment. Operates the machine to treat the patient with radiation. Checks plan for approved prescription to make sure the machine will deliver prescribed dose of radiation to the appropriate area of the patient's body.
  • Explains treatment plans to the patient and answers questions about treatment.
  • Implements and delivers a planned course of treatment with high professional standards for patient positioning, immobilization, documentation and patient comfort. Administers treatment accurately and safely, verifying all treatment data according to departmental treatment procedures.
  • Monitors and reports untoward/problematic symptoms, reactions, therapeutic responses, and incompatibilities to radiation oncologist.
  • Follows safety procedures to protect the patient and themselves from overexposure to radiation.
  • Monitors the patient to check for unusual reactions to the treatment.
  • Documents detailed records of treatment.
  • Constructs and/or prepares immobilization devices, beam directional devices and any other treatment aids, which facilitate treatment delivery.
  • Fulfills call duties according to departmental call back policy, as requested.
  • Withholds treatment when conditions warrant and consults with a Radiation Oncologist before proceeding.
  • Serves as a source of support and encouragement for each individual patient and their families.
  • Participates in weekly chart rounds with staff and physicians.
  • Participates in all healthcare effectiveness studies whether hospital wide or departmental. Continually enhances his/her professionalism via collaborative activities that promote professional practice and teamwork of the staff. Participates in CT simulation procedures as per departmental policy and procedures, constructs/fabricates immobilization devices needed for precise treatment delivery.
  • Interacts and evaluates honestly and fairly with all students placed within the department. Instructs appropriately and consistently, according to department treatment procedures, to benefit and advance the profession.
  • Uses equipment/supplies correctly: o Examine machines to make sure they are safe and working properly. o Performs daily and periodic quality assurance checks and related tasks as per directions of Medical Physicist. o Is able to detect equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action. o Appropriately and safely operates all equipment.
