Stone Ridge is seeking a Middle School Learning Specialist to begin work on August 14, 2024. This is a 10-month position.

Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, a member of the international Network of Sacred Heart Schools, is a Catholic, independent college preparatory school for girls, Grades 1-12, with a co-educational Early Childhood Program, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten in Bethesda, Maryland.

With over 700 students, and rooted in the Goals of Sacred Heart education, Stone Ridge inspires young women to lead and serve , through lives of purpose that integrate faith, intellect, community, social action, and personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom.

The goal of the Middle School Learning Support Program is to create a culture that promotes a positive attitude toward learning and optimizes the attainment of the educational goals of every student in our community.

We strive to create a flexible and nurturing environment in which students are recognized for their unique abilities and are able to grow both academically and emotionally.

Supporting students at Stone Ridge is a collaborative effort that is facilitated by a team of educators, including learning specialists, counselors, health services in conjunction with division-based administrators, and classroom teachers.

The Middle School Learning Specialist, one of two in the division, is responsible for co-leading the process of identifying, monitoring, advocating for, and supporting students with diverse learning profiles.

This Learning Specialist will primarily work with students in Grades 5 and 6. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following requirements :

Teaching :

  • Teaches the Study Skills Seminar classes to students in Grades 5 and 6.
  • Coaches and supports individual and small groups of students in language arts, reading skills, learning strategies, executive function skills, time management, and general study skills at regularly scheduled times;
  • Helps teachers plan and execute lesson plans across grade levels to support individualized learning needs;
  • Facilitates an Advisory group; and
  • Maintains files on students with diagnosed learning differences.

Testing :

  • Plans and implements standardized testing (such as the ERB), assists teachers with preparing students for testing, and analyzes data to enhance teaching and curricular development;
  • Administers a variety of diagnostic tests to referred students for the purpose of in-house assessment;
  • Observes students in the classroom;
  • Refers students to outside testing and tutorial support, in partnership with parents, teachers, and providers, when necessary;
  • Interprets and communicates the results of psycho-educational assessments to administrators, parents, and faculty;
  • Makes recommendations for student learning accommodations;
  • Monitors the use and implementation of student accommodations throughout the year; and
  • Meets with parents of children with documented learning differences to discuss accommodations.

Communication :

  • Communicates with Middle School faculty members about students with differing learning needs, and provides teachers with testing information, recommendations, strategies, and accommodations, as needed;
  • Offers educational programs or training to educate faculty and parents on topics relevant to learning differences;
  • Communicates regularly with parents of students with learning differences;
  • Collaborates with other Stone Ridge Learning Specialists;
  • Attends meetings with administrators, grade-level leaders, and teachers;
  • Cultivates a network of community professionals to support Stone Ridge students and families, and consults with outside specialists working with Stone Ridge students;
  • Arranges and facilitates outside tutors for students, as needed; and
  • Attends meetings for learning specialists at peer independent schools.

Admissions :

  • Serve on the Middle School Admissions Committee, and
  • Reviews all Middle School applications and offers recommendations.
