Description:

Summer Camp Instructors make up the core of Stokes’ Summer Camp programs. Instructors work in teams of two with up to 10 students per age-group. Instructors are passionate about learning outdoors, are experienced educators, and are safety-oriented. Instructors are expected to have backgrounds in curriculum design, outdoor and experiential education, and/or science.

This position is eligible to earn points for Utah Educator Licensure renewal through a corresponding course and partnership with Utah State University.

Responsibilities Include:

● Attending all training and camp dates

○ Training: 9am-5pm for two days sometime in the weeks before summer camp

○ Session One: June 3-7

● Ensuring student safety while in outdoor settings

● Driving vehicles in the National Forest, including on improved/paved highways, and improved/unpaved Forest roads

● Leading, assisting, and collaboratively teaching place-based environmental education and science lessons for up to 10 students at a time in the field

● Creating collaborative place-based environmental education and science curriculum for your age group aligned to the Utah Every Kid Outdoors Initiative

● Assessing and revising developed curriculum

● Adhering to Stokes’ Comprehensive Risk Management Program

● Being responsible for the safety and well-being of students, monitoring their whereabouts at all times

● Using positive guidance and redirection when necessary

● Modeling appropriate behaviors to help keep students attentive and safe

● Reporting any incidents or concerns to the Director of Education, and parents when needed

● Guiding and modeling proper environmental stewardship, including Leave No Trace principles

● Encouraging student teamwork, sharing, and friendship while respecting students’ independence

● Modeling integrity, curiosity, responsibility, creativity, and respect for everyone as well as appreciation for diversity

Daily Duties

● Arrive no later than 8am to prepare for each day

● Have parents sign out their child(ren) and make sure students are equipped for the day’s activities and weather

● Conduct engaging morning lesson(s) in accordance to the group’s weekly and daily learning theme and goals

● Hike on various National Forest formal and informal trails at a pace all students can maintain, with one instructor leading and one in the back at all times

● Conduct engaging afternoon lesson(s) in accordance to the group’s weekly and daily learning theme and goals

● Have parents sign out their child(ren) and provide highlights to parents at the end of each day on student achievement

● Depart after all students have been picked up, usually between 5:30pm and 6:00pm

Qualifications

● Embraces the mission and vision of Stokes Nature Center

● A passion for Logan Canyon and public lands

● Dedicated to timeliness

● 21 years old

● Prior teaching experience required

● Comprehensive background check required

● Must hold a current and valid driver’s license with clean driving record

● Current CPR, AED, and First Aid, or higher, medical certification is required or willingness to earn certification prior to employment

● A degree in education or environmental education is preferred but not required

● Must have the ability and willingness to meet the physical demands of the position (i.e., hike up to 5 miles over rugged terrain per day, bending, kneeling, can lift >50 pounds, teaching outdoors in all weather)

● Must exhibit positive and professional communication with students, parents, and staff

Compensation

Compensation for this position is on a fee basis rate. Employees are to work the required employment dates and complete required work per this description. Compensation is $500 per week for the completion of this position. In the event that the employee cannot perform the duties due to sickness or other unforeseen absence, compensation will be reduced by a proportionate amount.
