Still She Rises, Inc. (SSR) provides free legal representation to pregnant women, women with children, or women who are child caregivers and facing legal matters in the criminal, child welfare, or economic justice space. Still She Rises seeks to employhighly motivated individuals with a commitment to indigent defense. Founded in North Tulsa, Still She Rises offers client-centered, innovative, and holistic legal representation. We honor the dignity of the women we serve by championing our clients’ individual goals while also targeting systemic issues impacting the larger community.Responsibilities The Criminal Defense Practice Attorney embodies how we approach this work in the following aspects:
Client-Centered Direct Representation of Clients
Ability to represent clients against any and all criminal allegations in both Tulsa County and City of Tulsa court system.
Conducting client intake in jail, or in the office when feasible, within 24 hours from initial arrest or phone call
Center decision-making on all matters to clients
Litigate, advocate, and negotiate with client’s goals in mind
Effectively counsel clients on all possible legal outcomes and their options
Holistic & Collaborative Representation
Collaborate with other members of a client’s defense team, including advocates and investigators to develop and implement a comprehensive legal strategy
Collaborate with other attorneys on representation of a mutual client in multiple venues, including coordinating legal strategies, co-counseling appearances/hearings.
Develop and elevate the standard of practice through innovative motions, arguments, and strategies
Commit to ongoing training and development of skills in order to provide excellent and zealous representation to our clients
Qualifications To be eligible, applicants must have:
J.D. from an American Bar Association accredited law school
Membership in good standing to the Oklahoma bar or eligibility for admission to the Oklahoma Bar within six months of hire
Ability to drive and/or transport themselves and their work files to court, jail, and any other place where their physical presence is required.
Applicants must demonstrate:
Willingness to develop knowledge and expertise in criminal law
Ability to litigate and confidently engage in skillful negotiations with judges, prosecutors, and other actors within the systems our clients navigate
Excellent research, writing and courtroom advocacy skills
Ability and desire to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams
A commitment to defending individuals in the North Tulsa community through jury trial and/or disposition
Experience and interest in working in and with racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities
Ability to think critically and quickly on their feet
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
