The duties and responsibilities consist of providing comprehensive health assessment, diagnosis and treatment of common health problems of students within the guidelines of departmental and university rules, State of Maryland codes, and established protocols. Emphasis on the prevention of illness, promotion of health, and development of health maintenance.
Department: Student Affairs: Wellness Center
Education/Experience:
Bachelors degree in Nursing and Masters degree in Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner plus current CPR certification. Current active Maryland Nurse Practitioner license and national certification as a Family or Adult Nurse Practitioner. Experience in ambulatory health care setting and/or in college health preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
  • Mastery of medical assessment and diagnosis of physical and psychosocial conditions and treatment of common recurring illnesses
  • Considerable knowledge of standard medical practices and equipment used in diagnosing illnesses
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to maintain confidentiality
  • Familiarity with university and departmental policies and procedures
  • Appreciation for the philosophy and functioning of an integrated Wellness Center that includes both health and counseling services.
Physical Requirements:
Light work: exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Sedentary work. Keyboarding, talking, hearing, repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Requires physical abilities consistent with a busy office environment on a university campus. Daily work with computers, monitors, copy machines and other office equipment. Should be able to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends. Able to walk/run quickly to all areas on campus in response to an emergency. Intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, walking, and occasional lifting of light and heavy objects. Work is performed in the Wellness Center, with exposure to diseases. Requires normal range of hearing, vision, touch, and sense of smell. Climate controlled setting, space shared with physician.
Essential Functions:
  • Provide comprehensive health assessment, diagnosis and treatment of common physical and psychosocial health problems of college students
  • Monitor health requirements and immunization compliance for all full-time students in collaboration with the Administrative Coordinator
  • Provide well defined and specific health care to students, making referrals as necessary
  • Monitor health care needs and trends of university students
  • Provide immunizations and administers medications and treatments as required
  • Provide physical and psychosocial examinations of students
  • Prescribe, dispense, or recommend prescriptions for medication and other treatments
  • Consult with other Wellness professionals and follows through with referrals and appropriate documentation
  • Supervise the process of health profiles for incoming students
  • Monitor compliance with Maryland State law and CDC requirements regarding immunizations, including meningitis
  • Provide consultation to and seeks consultation from other health care clinicians to enhance quality and cost effective services for students.
  • Collaborate with Academic Support to coordinate long term medical excuses and contact faculty as appropriate
  • Follow up with students following medical transports
  • Collaborate with Wellness Center staff to develop policies and procedures for student health
  • Perform CLIA-waived testing, i.e. rapid strep, rapid flu, pregnancy testing, etc.
