Stevenson UniversitySummary:
Reporting to the Nursing Department Chair, the Faculty Director for Clinical Practice works collaboratively with nursing faculty and staff to support the clinical education of pre-licensure nursing students in the Berman School of Nursing and Health Professions (SNHP). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, management of the nursing skills laboratories, administration of clinical competency testing and clinical remediation, and coordination of clinical orientation for students and Clinical Supervisors. Teaching responsibilities include providing 12 contact hours of instruction per year in the pre-licensure nursing program, to include teaching students in the clinical setting. Additional responsibilities include working with the clinical placement team to facilitate staffing of clinical supervisors, serving on a Nursing Unit Working Group, and participating in course and program assessment activities. This is a 12-month administrative faculty position and as such, the Director fulfills all responsibilities of a full-time faculty member as defined in the Stevenson University Policy Manual and in the Full-Time Faculty Job Description for the School of Nursing & Health Professions. Rank and title are determined at the time of hiring and will be commensurate with education and experience.

Education/Experience:
Doctorate degree in nursing or a related field and a Masters degree in nursing required for the rank of Assistant Professor or higher. Masters degree in nursing required for the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor. College level teaching experience and clinical nursing experience within the past 1-4 years are preferred. CPR certification is required and CNE or certification in area of clinical practice preferred. Must be Maryland Board of Nursing certified or eligible.

  • Effective fiscal planning and budgeting skills.
  • Ability to manage and assess programs, projects, initiatives, etc., and to foster and promote the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience in assessment and outcomes measurements as well as accreditation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and MS Office 365 applications, learning management systems (Blackboard preferred), relevant academic technologies, Informer, and ERP (Ellucian preferred).

Physical Requirements:
Medium work: exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Requires physical abilities consistent with a busy college environment on a campus with buildings and laboratories separated by some distance. Sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, keyboarding, and repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Position requires additional hours for meetings and events, including days, evenings, and weekends. Position requires sitting and standing for long periods of time and the ability to speak clearly and effectively for an extended period of time.
Essential Functions:
ADMINISTRATIVE ACTIVITYEssential administrative functions include:
  • Manage the nursing skills laboratories, including monitoring inventory, negotiating pricing, placing orders, maintaining supplies and equipment, and coordinating open laboratory sessions.
  • Support the nursing curriculum by working with department faculty and staff to develop, coordinate, and conduct supplemental laboratory sessions for skills practice as needed in specific nursing courses.
  • Coordinate the orientation of Clinical Supervisors upon hire and on an annual basis.
  • Work with the clinical placement team to facilitate and support the assignment of Clinical Supervisors to student groups, including maintaining an updated roster of available Clinical Supervisors for each semester.
  • Utilize web-based and online systems to manage documents related to simulation and skills-based learning objectives and course outcomes.
  • Collect and analyze data and report findings as requested to the Nursing Unit Leadership Team and Dean.
  • Work with Department Chair to set and manage the lab schedule each semester.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to promoting a campus culture that values inclusion, equity, diversity, and excellence.
  • Support the Universitys efforts to foster effective faculty recruitment, retention, and continuing professional development initiatives including particular attention to recruiting, retaining, and developing faculty of diverse backgrounds.
  • Actively promote interest in the University wherever and whenever possible.
  • Remain current in the field and active in the profession.
INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITY
  • Provide 12 contact hours of instruction per year in the pre-licensure nursing program, to include teaching students in the clinical setting.
  • Plan and implement clinical remediation for students as needed and requested by faculty and/or clinical supervisors and provide documentation of student performance according to department policy and procedure.
  • Coordinate the summer clinical orientation session for junior-level and transfer students in the pre-licensure nursing program.
  • Teaching responsibilities include time spent in classes and in immediate preparation for them; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught; preparing teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies; reviewing written or online projects and papers; evaluating presentations; and supervising independent study projects. Note that all SU courses use the BlackBoard Course Management System.
  • Administrative responsibilities include writing and/or updating syllabi each semester or term; reading and responding to emails; attendance verification, academic alerts, and other reports as requested; and alerting appropriate university personnel to student concerns on a timely basis.
  • Maintain teaching effectiveness by encouraging active student learning, reflecting, and responding to student evaluations of teaching, and adjusting teaching strategies per recommendations from classroom observations, supervisor evaluations, and other relevant sources of feedback.
  • Prepare courses and syllabi in accordance with published faculty guidelines.
  • Schedule and hold at least three office hours per week.
  • Evaluate, update, and revise courses regularly.
  • Participate in the assessment activities of the program, School, and University.
  • Collegiality, as well as professional and ethical conduct, enhances teaching, learning and the general reputation of all persons. Therefore, all faculty members are expected to serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public.
  • Every faculty member is guaranteed academic freedom in accordance with the statement on academic freedom and responsibilities of faculty members, as in the policy manuals.
SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY
  • Engage in scholarly activity commensurate with rank and in alignment with the SNHP Faculty Job Description.
  • Engage in continuing professional development related to the field and pedagogical best practices.
  • Pursue internal and external funding sources to support scholarly activity.
  • Maintain clinical practice as required by the Maryland Board of Nursing to keep Registered Nurse license.
SERVICE ACTIVITY
  • Meet with and advise students as needed as related to instructional activity.
  • Department service includes contributing to student recruitment, retention, and registration efforts; attending departmental and nursing unit meetings; participating in Open Houses and recruiting efforts; attending and participating in planning and coordination of departmental and nursing unit events; and establishing professional relationships to generate clinical placement opportunities for students.
  • University service includes, but is not limited to, service on the University, School and Departmental committees.
  • Engage and participate in the life and work of the department, School of Nursing and Health Professions, and Stevenson University.
  • Attend all Faculty/Staff University, School, and Department meetings.
  • Attend all convocations, including commencement exercises.
  • Complete all required trainings and professional learning assignments.
  • Participate in faculty governance.
  • Mentor students (e.g., club moderator, mentoring programs - distinguished from guiding research or academic pursuits)
  • Actively participate on Department, School, and University committees.
  • Participate in recruitment and yield events.
  • Participate in Department, School, and University assessment activities, including, but not limited to, annual assessment of courses and periodic assessments of programs for University and/or accreditation purposes.
  • Mentor and advise new faculty.
  • Serve on Faculty Mentoring and Evaluation Committee(s) as requested.
  • Serve as a point of contact for Clinical Supervisors in clinical courses as part of role as Course Coordinator, including orienting Clinical Supervisors to specific course requirements, monitoring issues in the clinical setting, and reporting as needed to the Department Chair.
  • Serve on at least one Nursing Unit Working Group.
  • Attend all Faculty/Staff University, School, and Department meetings.
  • Attend all convocations, including, but not limited to, Convocation, Commencement exercises (minimum expectation is attending the SNHP ceremony), and the pinning ceremony.
  • Engage and participate in the life and work of the Department, School of Nursing and Health Professions, and Stevenson University.
  • Engage in service to the department, school, and university in alignment with rank and the SNHP Faculty Job Description, including but not limited to serving on at least one Nursing Unit Working Group.
  • Serve on School and University committees as needed.
