Position Summary

The primary role of the Industrial Engineer-Continuous Improvement is to provide support, guidance, and leadership in partnership with the value streams to develop, execute, and maintain process improvement practices to drive improvements in safety, quality, delivery, process efficiency, and the flow of information and materials. They will deliver coaching and training on continuous improvement/lean principles, concepts, and tools to different levels of the organization. They will work with the value stream leaders and participants to use these concepts/tools, facilitate team decisions, manage teamwork, resolve team conflict, and share their knowledge of continuous improvement. This position will require strong organizational and project management skills to allow for efficient prioritizations of tasks and to ensure improvements have been fully executed.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Assist value streams in identifying and eliminating waste within manufacturing and business processes.
  2. Facilitate continuous improvement/lean activities such as: 5S, 8D problem solving, value stream mapping, hoshin planning, and kaizen events.
  3. Create appropriate flow trigger methodologies such as kanban, visual management systems, heijunka, parts supermarkets, and material replenishment design.
  1. Prepare and conduct training, coaching, and mentoring of continuous improvement principles, concepts, behaviors, and tools that enhance the existing culture to one of continuous improvement at all levels of the organization.
  1. Document, create, evaluate, and maintain procedures and standard work instructions for production and administrative processes.
  1. Choose and apply appropriate continuous improvement tools in a way that will improve production efficiency, capacity, and process reliability.
  2. Utilize strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to be flexible, adaptable, and change priorities and direction as needed, allowing for optimum effectiveness and ensure improvements have been fully executed.
  3. Prioritize improvement opportunities where applicable and based on the needs of the organization.
  4. Establish, communicate, and reinforce best practices agreed upon.
  1. Work flexible hours, as needed, to accommodate training and implementation needs of all departments and shifts.
  2. Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in collaborative manner with customers, suppliers, co-workers, and management.
  3. Helps company meet its Strategic, Quality and Safety objectives.
  4. Other duties may be assigned.

Job Requirements/Qualifications

  • Levels I & II – Bachelor of Science in Engineering discipline or equivalent, and/or qualified years of experience; Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering preferred.
  • Levels III & Sr. – Bachelor of Science required; Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering preferred.
  • Successful continuous improvement/lean implementation experience with a proven record of sustainable results.
  • Demonstrated reputation as an informal leader and mentor in the field.
  • Must possess strong decision-making skills and the ability to lead a project with minimal supervision.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment with a strong focus on continuous improvement/lean manufacturing operations.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge (Windows, email, internet, etc.).
    • Microsoft Word – Advanced
    • Microsoft Excel – Advanced
    • Microsoft PowerPoint – Intermediate
    • Microsoft Outlook – Intermediate
  • Communication skills (Develop written communications requiring grammar skills; Interact with customers or suppliers on an explanatory basis; Interact with groups of people and co-workers; Use of telephones, public address system, and oral communication).
  • Basic and advanced math skills, spelling, and reading skills (Basic instructional and technical information).

Physical Demands of Position

  • This position requires walking, sitting or standing to a significant degree.
  • Must have the ability to lift 70 pounds from floor to waist, carry 50 pounds, and push and/or pull up to 100 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to climb ladders and/or stairs.
  • Stooping, crouching, kneeling and bending.
  • Handling, feeling, and gripping would be required for some activities.
  • Visual acuity is required to inspect work completed.
  • This role may be subject to internal and external environmental conditions.
