This full time permanent position is located within the Bureau of Business Services, Division of Business Management and headquartered at the Hill Farms State Office Building on the near west side of Madison. Position Summary

As WisDOT's health and safety expert, you will be responsible for administering the following:

  • agency safety training
  • hazard identification and assessment
  • hazard prevention/control
  • injury/illness investigation

You will also develop, administer, implement, and maintain all of the Department’s occupational health and industrial hygiene programs and work with other health and safety staff members in the development and administration of the Department’s safety programs. This may involve serving as an expert witness for court testimonies when needed. Other duties include reviewing, analyzing and interpreting statutes, administrative code, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations utilized in developing and/or revising safety program policies/procedures for the agency. In addition, it will be your responsibility to provide technical assistance and occupational health and safety training to staff to ensure compliance with appropriate state and federal safety and health regulations aimed at reducing accidents, injuries, and worker’s compensation costs.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range (15-03) with an annual salary of $62,400 - $71,240 (or $30.00 - $34.25 per hour), plus excellent benefits. A twelve-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Job Details

This position requires the ability to stand, sit, climb in and out of equipment for inspections such as forklifts, bucket trucks, weight scale pits, etc. as well as the ability to conduct testing of various safety related equipment (such as personal protective equipment, vests, respirators, dust masks, safety harnesses used in bridge inspections as needed for inspection purposes, etc.)

This position will also be required to travel independently on a frequent basis throughout the State of Wisconsin and to various WisDOT facilities to perform safety audits, safety training, and conduct injury and/or illness investigations. This may include overnight stays as necessary.

Certain positions within this Department may allow hybrid/work from home flexibility for a portion of their work schedule, depending on the needs of the position and the work unit. This topic and any hybrid work flexibility that may be available will be discussed in more detail in the interview process.It is not anticipated that working outside of Wisconsin (or bordering cities) will be allowed because positions will need to report to the Madison, WI office at least two days per week.

Qualifications

In order to be considered for the next step in the recruitment process, qualified applicants must detail having experience performing all the following:

  • Ensuring business’s health and safety related operations are compliant with state and/or federal regulations (i.e. performing duties such as planning, developing, implementing, maintaining processes to be compliant with OSHA, state, and/or local health safety related policies, etc.)
  • Developing and conducting occupational health and safety training
  • Performing on site safety audits, inspections and/or surveys to identify and/or correct workplace

In addition to having experience performing all the above, well qualified applicants will also detail having experience performing at least one or more of the following:

  • Serving as a subject matter expert/leading a team
  • Maintaining and testing indoor air quality and/or noise monitoring equipment
  • Establishing and maintaining an accident prevention program
