What We’re Seeking: DATCP currently has an opening for three (3) Chemist positions within the Bureau of Lab Services. This recruitment is for 1 project position and 2 permanent positions.
The projectposition has a projected end date of January 4, 2025. Project positions are eligible for benefits including health insurance, but the incumbent does not attain permanent civil service status.
Where We’re Located: Each position is located at the Bureau of Lab Services Building situated on Madison’s southeast side. We are only minutes away from the Beltline Highway, Interstate 90 and Highway 51 for quick access to local restaurants, retail and service locations.

LFFM Chemist – Project (1) position is responsible for the analysis of food samples for routine surveillance using FDA test methods. Sample types analyzed are directed by the FDA in support of the mission to ensure a safe food supply. Samples are analyzed for poisons, toxins, chemical adulterants, heavy metals, and industrial chemical contaminates. Sample are analyzed through a variety of techniques including, LC/MS, ICP/MS, GC/MS, ELISA, and other wet chemistry techniques.
Chemist – Permanent (2) positions in the Feed, Fertilizer, and Food Laboratories. These positions will analyze livestock feed, pet food samples, and fertilizer samples for guaranteed constituents at the proper levels. Samples are analyzed by LC, LC/MS, UV/Vis Spectroscopy, and wet chemistry techniques. The positions will also be responsible for analyzing meat and dairy products in the Food Laboratory. Samples are analyzed for alkaline phosphatase to confirm the pasteurization was effective and that products conform to a standard of identity. Samples are analyzed by FTIR, Fluorophos, and other wet chemistry techniques.

The classification of this position is Chemist, which is in schedule-range 15-04 with a starting pay of $24.50-$26.50 per hour. This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.
DATCP does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the selected applicant being able to provide documentation of eligibility to work in the United States.
A criminal background check will be performed on the selected applicant prior to an offer of employment.
