The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking qualified candidates for the SR 99 Tunnels Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 3 (in-training) position. This role involves applying advanced technical expertise to resolve complex system maintenance and repair issues. The position entails performing maintenance and repair of electrical and fire life safety systems within the SR 99 Tunnel complex. The successful candidate will also play a crucial role in promoting a respectful and inclusive work environment, aligning with WSDOT's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
 
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 3 (in-training) will:
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, test, and repair systems up to 120 volts that include building and roadway fire suppression and detection systems, programmable logic controllers (PLC), ventilation systems, emergency phones, air monitoring systems, building security and access systems, lighting, fiber optics, and network devices.
  • Assist crew members in accomplishing their tasks and ensure compliance with department guidelines and policies.
  • Monitor systems to ensure operability and safety.
  • Install new system equipment and components to enhance or improve operation as needed.
  • Operate various gas, propane, and electronic support equipment such as manlifts, forklifts, bucket trucks, and electric carts to accomplish tasks.
  • Operate motor vehicles and CDL equipment to perform work, traffic control, and snow & ice operations.
  • Complete scheduled maintenance as assigned by the Lead Technician.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including working with other trades as needed and serving as the designated lead while the designated lead is on leave if assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications
This is an Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 3 position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level, depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.
 
To be considered for the Electrical & Electronic Systems – Trainee level, the following are required: 
  • High School Graduation or GED
 
To be considered for the Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 1 level, the following are required: 
  • Two (2) years (approximately 4,000 hours) of relevant experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.
OR
  • Completion of equivalent, relevant professional formal training through an electrical apprenticeship program, accredited electrical or electronics training program, vocational or technical school, military-based electrical/electronics training, or agency-specific in-training plan. 
OR
  • Associate degree in electrical or electronics technology may substitute for some education or experience.
 
To be considered for the Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 2 level, the following are required: 
  • Four (4) years (approximately 8,000 hours) of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.
OR
  • Completion of equivalent, relevant professional formal training through an electrical apprenticeship program, or an accredited electrical or electronics training program, or vocational or technical school, military-based electrical/electronics training; agency-specific in-training plan.
OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical or electronics technology and one (1) year of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.
OR
 
  • Possession of a valid Washington State journey or master-level electrical license (EL01, EL06, EL07, or ME01) may substitute for some education or experience.
 
To be considered for the Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 3 level, the following are required: 
  • Possession of a valid Washington State journey or master-level electrical license (EL01, EL06, EL07, or ME01) may substitute for some education or experience.
OR
  • Five (5) years (approximately 10,000 hours) of relevant professional experience performing technical, electrical, fire system, and/or electronic work.
OR
  • Completion of equivalent, relevant professional formal training through an electrical apprenticeship program, or an accredited electrical or electronics training program, or vocational or technical school, military-based electrical/electronics training; agency-specific in-training plan.
OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical or electronics technology and two (2) years of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical, fire system, and/or electronic work.
 
Applies to all Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist (EESS) levels:
  • High school graduation or GED
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License
  • Class B CDL endorsement, automatic transmission, without air brake restriction (or ability to acquire within 6 months of hire)
  • Ability to perform Basic algebraic equations.
  • Ability to see and differentiate colors to perform electrical and electronic maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to transport up to 50 lbs. of equipment and move about unrestricted while climbing stairs/ladders/inclines and uneven surfaces; ability to work at heights exceeding 100 feet in/around/over live traffic.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and use a 700 MHz radio network.
  • Ability to input information on a computer, generating work reports.
  • Knowledge of how to operate basic testing equipment for electrical systems.
 
It is preferredthat qualified candidates also have the following:
  • Journey Level Electrician (EL01, EL02, EL04, or EL09)
  • Electronics Certification by Washington State CET or International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET).
  • A certification for computers and electronics
  • Washington State Flagging Card

 Important Notes 
  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs. 
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • Typical schedule: Monday through Thursday, 5:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Additionally, work may be required after hours and on weekends for scheduled and emergency situations.
  • Depending on qualifications, this position can be filled at the EESS Trainee - 3 levels: 
    • EESS Trainee - annual salary range: $55,251 - $67,296. 
    • EESS 1 - annual salary range: $70,749 - $86,158. 
    • EESS 2 - annual salary range: $78,094 - $95,155.
    • EESS 3 - annual salary range: $82,026 - $99,943.
  • The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
