State of Washington is Hiring a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (In-Training) - Night Shift Near Mount Vernon, WA

The OpportunityWSDOT is currently seeking multiple maintenance professionals to join our maintenance team in Mount Vernon, WA, supporting the vast infrastructure of Washington. This opportunity is perfect for someone who loves working with their hands, knowing their work is done on roadways and in a variety of weather. This team member will assist with the maintenance and operations of the state highways, and adjacent right of ways to assure they remain in a condition that promotes the movement of traffic, and safety to the motoring public. By taking on this role, you are serving a key and vital function to the State of Washington. Working in the maintenance area will require responsible, safety-minded individuals to accomplish assigned tasks and may require operating trucks as well as other heavy equipment. These positions require a quick response time to job sites. Highway maintenance crews are ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress upward through the Highway Maintenance field and achieve the goal class of a Highway Maintenance Worker 2. Candidates will be considered for a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or Highway Maintenance Worker 2, depending on their qualifications. Annual salary levels for each position are: Highway Maintenance Worker 1: $50,107 - $60,746 AnnuallyHighway Maintenance Worker 2: $56,522 - $68,824 AnnuallyWhat to ExpectAmong the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will: Operate class A, B, or C equipment, power tools, and performs manual labor to complete activities such as asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair; apply concrete, asphalt, synthetic materials. Perform drainage maintenance and repair on structures like catch basins, culverts, pipes, ponds, sedimentation facilities, swales, ditches, and other types of drainage features; as well as provide for erosion and slide repair.Install, maintain, repair guardrail, fences, impact attenuator concrete barriers and other safety features. Remove dangerous trees and provides vegetation management, such as mowing, applying pesticide applications, establishing, maintaining, and repairing landscaped areas, including planting and remediating sites. Haul materials such as rip rap hot and cold asphalt, removes litter, dead animals, and debris from State rights-of-way (ROW) and roadways. Performs routine inspections of highway features. Uses iPad and computers to track, document, account for inventory, inventory highway section features, and report daily work activities conforming to the Maintenance Accountability Process (MAP) system. This includes performing basic math for inventory, product mixing and area calculations.Transport up to 50 lbs. of heavy equipment and materials between work sites.Assist in assembling, installing, and replacing signs, sign components, and signposts, using a variety of equipment and tools.Design and set up traffic control for all operations, including full road or bridge closures according to Department and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards. Perform traffic control.Removal of snow and ice during winter season. QualificationsTo be considered for this opportunity Highway Maintenance Worker 1 level, the following are required: One (1) year of experience performing maintenance activities or equivalent.Education from a trade school may be substituted for the required experience on a year for year basis.Must obtain Class A CDL with endorsement “N” and without air brakes restriction and no transmission restrictions within 12 months of employment.To be considered for this opportunity Highway Maintenance Worker 2 level, the following are required: High school graduation or GED.Two (2) years of highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, or heavy equipment experience OR other related work experience. Valid Washington State CDL Class A driver’s license with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction, with valid medical card.In addition, candidates at either level will have: Ability to lift and transport up to 50lbs with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to work in all weather conditions including confined spaces, uneven terrain, and next to fast high volume highway traffic. Ability to operate heavy equipment, and hand and power tools. It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License. Backflow Prevention Tester Certification. Crane Certificate. Important Notes This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.This position is not eligible for remote work.The schedule for these positions is: Sunday – Wednesday, 8:00 pm – 6:30 am. In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
