The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a journey level trades professional who is excited to serve as an all-around resource in facilities maintenance as a Maintenance Mechanic 3 in Vancouver, WA. In this role, you will be responsible for preventative and corrective maintenance on all buildings and structures within the Southwest Region. This senior specialist will perform trades maintenance activities at the region’s rest areas and radio sites, ensuring WSDOT’s facilities and mechanical systems are operating safely and efficiently. Our top candidate will possess journey level skills to operate a wide range of hand and power tools to include trucks, bucket trucks, and man lifts. This position is critical in fostering a respectful and healthy work environment with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
 
What to Expect
This position performs work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and will work with electrical hazards/ energized electrical equipment and stored energy. Outdoor work could be various weather conditions depending on time of year. Working conditions may include uneven terrain, confined spaces such as attics and crawl spaces, around electrical panels, fixtures, wiring, switches and may be at elevated heights, above 300 feet. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies. May be required to travel out-of-town within the region on per diem up to 75% of the time.
 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
  • Make repairs and perform preventive maintenance to building structures to include roofing repairs, plumbing repairs, carpentry, window replacement, overhead doors, etc.
  • Maintain and repair heating system components and related equipment including heat pumps, gas heaters, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and vents.
  • Make repairs and modifications to potable and non-potable water systems, water/sewage systems and hot water systems. 
  • Repair and replace plumbing, piping, fixtures, and related mechanical devices.
  • Perform drainage system maintenance, oil/water separator, drainage swales and ponds.
  • Maintain yard and office lighting equipment and systems.
  • Maintain fire alarm systems, security systems, and power gate systems region wide.
  • Drive trucks, operate man-lifts, operate a wide variety of hand and power tools to complete work assignments.
  • Make repairs and perform preventive maintenance on buildings, heating, lighting, and water supply equipment that support the highway system and at highway safety rest areas on Interstate 5, SR14, SR401, SR504, and SR12. 

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Four (4) years of experience as a full-time helper to a journeyman in one of the construction trades OR full journey level status in a trade’s union or successful completion of a recognized trades apprenticeship program AND one (1) year experience maintaining building mechanical equipment, plumbing, repairing facilities, HVAC, and carpentry tasks.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A, without air brakes restriction OR the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. (Agency may assist with obtaining).
  • Backflow assembly tester certification to be obtained within 12 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills including email, Internet, and data entry.
  • The ability to manipulate and transport up to 50 pounds of equipment and/or tools. 
  • The ability to respond to non-scheduled, call-out emergencies on weekends and/or holidays. 
  • Ability to travel out-of-town within the region.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Two (2) years of journey-level experience working in the HVAC trade. 
  • EPA Class 2 Refrigeration license or EPA Universal Refrigeration License.
  • EL-06A Limited Energy electrical license.
  • Building Operators Certification (BOC) level 1-2.
  • Highschool diploma or equivalent.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
