Do you enjoy driving, have a Commercial Driver's License (Class B - P1), and want to perform meaningful work that directly helps our resident Veterans? Here is your opportunity! We are hiring for a full-time Resident Transportation Driver (Truck Driver 2) to provide safe transportation for up to 240 residents of the Washington Veterans Home to various medical and dental appointments throughout the Puget Sound.
Please Note: Expected work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.., on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Incumbent may be required to work hours past end of shift.
  • This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.
  • Position(s) at this location will also receive 5% Premium Pay for 24/7 facilities. Employees must physically work at the facility 3 days per workweek to qualify. The 5% Premium Pay is in effect until June 29th, 2025.

As a Resident Transportation Driver for the Washington Veterans Home, you will operate an assortment of vehicles in a safe and efficient manner to ensure our residents receive the necessary care at medical, dental, and other health-related appointments.

Duties

Some of what you will be doing includes:

  • Operating transportation buses and vehicles to provide services for Washington Veterans Home residents and the transportation department.
  • Driving and transporting residents and personnel to and from required medical, dental, and various health-related appointments.
  • Transferring residents safely to and from vehicles while in wheelchairs, Gerri chairs, and other various medical devices.
  • Picking up and delivering medications, wheelchairs, and personal effects to residents.
  • Loading and directing the loading of passengers and wheelchairs to ensure proper weight distribution; verifying all wheelchairs and residents are secured.
  • Refueling vehicles, performing inspections, completing mileage logs, and immediately reporting mechanical deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Conducting pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Routinely communicating with dispatcher for instructions, directions, and changes to assignment and updating dispatcher when assigned schedule is not met.
  • Maintaining vehicle in a clean and sanitary condition after use.
  • Helping residents acquire meals when necessary.

Qualifications

Required

  • Must have a Commercial Driver's License, Class B - P1.
Preferred/Desired:
  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Possession of:
    • Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement.
    • Valid motor vehicle driver's license with the ability to obtain intermediate or equivalent endorsement.
  • Ability to:
    • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Maintain safety and/or infection control as related to medical assistance.
    • Lead and work directly with residents.
    • Understand and apply rules and written/oral instructions.
    • Prepare messages and simple reports.
    • Maintain accurate records.
    • Read and understand written instructions, directions, and procedures.
    • Make simple arithmetic calculations.
    • Follow safety policies and procedures.
Special Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Must have and maintain Washington Commercial Driver's License, Class B - P1.
  • Must submit to law enforcement fingerprinting.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.
  • Must be able to lift objects weighing over 80 lbs. and capable of reaching a minimum of 36" for resident repositioning or to access supplies.
  • Must be able to walk, sit, and bend in an unrestricted manner on a consistent basis during the entire workday and capable of pushing and pulling with sufficient strength to accomplish tasks as pushing residents in wheelchairs, gurneys, or stretchers.
  • Must be able to read and understand written instructions, directions, and procedures in English.
  • Positions requiring travel must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and must be insured if driving a privately owned vehicle on state business.
  • Candidates who are offered a job with WDVA must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.
