Looking to start your State career while directly contributing to a clean and healthy living environment for our resident Veterans? This position as a full-time Laundry Worker 1 at the Washington Veterans Home in Port Orchard, Washington may be just what you're looking for!
Please Note:Expected work hours are 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. Incumbent must be able to adapt to schedule changes prompted by program needs and may be required to attend training and classes at other locations.
  • This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.
Position(s) at this location will also receive 5% Premium Pay for facilities open twenty-four hours per day. Employees must physically work at the facility 3 days per workweek to qualify. The 5% Premium Pay is in effect until June 29th, 2025.

These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to honorably discharged Veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star families.
As a Laundry Worker 1, you will provide linen and resident personal laundry services for both the Washington Veterans Home and Washington Soldiers Home.

Duties

Some of what you'll be doing includes:

  • Operating washing machines, dryers, marking machines, and presses.
  • Weighing, shaking, and sorting out all soiled linen daily.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting laundry carts daily.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized work area.
  • Reporting problems or malfunctions of laundry equipment to supervisor.
  • Drying, hanging, folding, and sorting personal clothing for final distribution for designated areas.
  • Collecting, washing, drying, and delivering various materials to ancillary departments.
  • Operating laundry truck and lifting gate for on-campus deliveries and pick-ups.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ability to:
    • Read and understand verbal and written instructions, directions, and procedures in English.
    • Make basic math calculations.
    • Lift up to 50 lbs. with sufficient strength and walk, sit, and bend in an unrestricted manner during the entire workday. Pushing and pulling is required of carts up to 450 lbs.
    • Follow safety policies, procedures, and practices.
Preferred/Desired:
  • Experience in working in a nursing care facility or laundry/cleaning services.
  • High school graduation or GED equivalent.
Special Requirements:
  • Must be able pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.
  • Must have valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Candidates who are offered a job with WDVA must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.
