In addition to the salary mentioned:
**Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Health Specialists will be compensated basic salary plus 10% Hazard pay for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment (excluding hard hats, boots, hearing and eye protection) to enter a hazardous worksite to consult, inspect or investigate where serious hazards are present.
As the Industrial Hygienist 3 (Hygiene Consultant) you play an important role in achieving the mission of Division of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) Consultation by analyzing employer's accident records, industrial insurance data and safety and health inspection/consultation histories to determine what additional services and or programs need to be recommended to employers.
You will provide onsite consultative assistance to employers with emphasis being placed on small businesses in high hazard fixed industries and the construction industry. You will assist employers in establishing and implementing safety and health programs designed to meet the DOSH Standards and in understanding their obligations under the WISH Act.
You will be a member of, full-service consultation teams on complex evaluations of employer safety and health programs, recommend hazard controls to prevent injuries and illnesses, develop and give training on specific safety and health topics and provide training and mentoring to other Industrial Hygiene, Safety and Risk Management Specialists in the region. All while ensuring verification of the correction of serious hazards identified during onsite consultations to include complex consultations.

Duties

Some of what you’ll do:

  • Travel to employers’ place of business or worksite and conduct journey-level onsite Industrial Hygiene consultations, independently or as part of a consultation team, for employers emphasizing small businesses in high hazard fixed industries and construction.
  • Performs complex safety and health surveys and audits to identify, evaluate and recommend controls for occupational health hazards, including chemical, biological and physical hazards.
  • Performs coordinated consultations with Safety and Risk Management when requested.
  • Advises employers of methods to eliminate unsafe work practices, including ergonomic hazards, applying the hierarchy of controls. Researches accident and injury records for specific industries and employers.
  • Evaluates worksites and assists employers in developing required safety and health written programs.
  • Conducts walk around assessment of all types of worksites; Walks over uneven ground and climb stairs and/or ladders.
  • Takes field notes, photos, and makes observations; conducts interviews; reviews written materials/programs, data sheets, and written reports or records provided by employer or employee representatives; critically evaluates use of protective methods, including use of personal protective equipment, safe work practices, and engineering controls using instruments as required.
  • Prepares written reports, inputs exposure documentation, data, hazard descriptions, potential effects, recommended actions and corrective measures needed including interim protection.
  • Uses industrial hygiene sampling equipment and techniques for analysis and measurement of noise, non-ionizing radiation, vibration, temperatures and chemical exposure for comparison with exposure limits.
  • Submits samples and reports to laboratory.
  • Performs industrial hygiene calculations, and analyzes and reports on survey results and laboratory data.
  • Organizes, writes and edits comprehensive reports including analysis of the employer’s accident prevention program and other written programs. Submits reports and conclusions for review and approval by supervisor.
  • Provides verbal and written report to customer and monitors status to abatement completion and submission of report to Forms and Records.
  • Fields questions originating from phone calls, e-mails or face to face visits in or out of the office.
  • Makes referrals to other DOSH and L&I programs.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • A Bachelor's degree involving major study in occupational safety and/or health, industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, chemical, mechanical or sanitary engineering, environmental science, nursing, medicine, biology, or related field
  • Three years of experience as an industrial hygienist. *
  • Detection of Occupational Health Hazards-Skilled in sampling and direct measuring techniques for chemical, biological and physical occupational health hazards.
  • Coursework-Industrial Hygiene-Successful completion of college-level coursework in Industrial Hygiene.
  • Knowledge of Safety and Health Rules and Regulations-Possession of a thorough understanding of both WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Administration) and OSHA (federal government’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration) industrial hygiene related rules and regulations. Understands and is able to explain to customers what their businesses must do to comply with occupational health regulations.
  • A valid unrestricted driver license and may not have convictions for driving under the influence or driving offense that endangered or harmed others within the past 7 years.
  • A Master’s degree involving major study in industrial hygiene or related field will substitute for one year of industrial hygiene experience.
DESIRED:
  • Professional safety certification, such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Masters’ degree in industrial hygiene or related science with 3 years of experience in industrial hygiene which should include broad experience in the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and management of occupational health hazards (chemical, physical, & biological).
The ideal candidate will also have some or all of the following skills and experience:
  • Skilled in sampling and direct measuring techniques for chemical, biological and physical occupational health hazards.
  • Possession of a thorough understanding of both WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Administration) and OSHA (federal government’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration) industrial hygiene related rules and regulations.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
  • Three or more years of experience conducting training and delivering presentations to large groups.
  • Three or more years of experience leading complex consultations or inspections.
  • Strong working knowledge of occupational health and safety standards, consensus standards and industry best practices. (Three years of experience.)
