CPS/ FAR Social Service Specialist 2-3 In Training (SSS3)
Location: Spokane Valley, WA

Salary: $4,968 - $7,016 Monthly. This position may receive 10% assignment pay when the incumbent reaches the goal class of Social Service Specialist 3. This is in addition to the regular base salary; the required duties include performing visits in unregulated environments, such as private residences, to conduct investigations for allegations of abuse and/or neglect to assess the safety of vulnerable children.

The Opportunity:
In this role, you will assess complex family situations, interview children and parents, evaluate child safety, and develop plans to protect children in their own homes. FAR is an alternative CPS pathway for families with low and moderate allegations of child abuse or neglect. FAR Social Service Specialists work with families to keep children safe and build on their strengths to establish community support for long-term success.
Some of what you'll do:
  • Assess intakes alleging neglect of children and/or low-risk physical abuse including interviewing children, family members, and collateral sources to gather information.
  • Implement case plans that protect children from harm.
  • Provide strength-based and solution-focused services to ongoing cases for families.
  • Assess and intervene on routine referrals or cases to protect children, and plan for permanent living arrangements for children assuring health and education needs are met.
  • Assess the need for out-of-home placement, and work with the family to find the most appropriate placement.
  • Monitor the health and safety of children by regular visitation in the placement facility and other settings..
  • Develop and implement individual safety, service, and voluntary service plans with families designed to appropriately address safety threats.
  • Assist with coordination of case assessment actions while utilizing solution-based casework principles.
  • Utilize FamLink to document case activities and maintain case records.
  • Write letters, prepare court petitions and reports, social summaries, case notes, and safety assessments/plans.

Salary Ranges:
The goal class of this position is a Social Service Specialist 3. We will also consider candidates at the Social Service Specialist 2 level, with a training plan to advance to the goal class. The Hiring Manager will evaluate the education and experience of each candidate for one of the levels mentioned below.
  • A Social Service Specialist 3 at Range 58 makes $5,214 – $7,016.
  • A Social Service Specialist 2 at Range 56 makes $4,968 – $6,676.

What we are looking for at each level:

Social Service Specialist 2:
  • Bachelor’s degree in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, or any degree which includes 30 semester or 45 quarter credits in a Social Service discipline AND one (1) year of paid social service experience*.
OR
  • Master's degree in social services, human services, behavioral sciences AND a completed Practicum.
OR
  • One (1) year of experience as a Social Service Specialist 1.
Social Service Specialist 3:
  • Bachelor’s degree in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, or any degree that includes 30 semester or 45 quarter credits in a Social Service discipline AND Two (2) years of paid social service experience*.
OR
  • Master's degree in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, or any degree which includes 30 semester or 45 quarter credits in a Social Service discipline AND One (1) year of paid social service experience*.
OR
  • One (1) year of experience as a Social Service Specialist 2.
  • Paid Social Service experience must have included assessing risk and safety to children and providing direct family-centered practice services.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of social casework principles and practices, risk assessment and decision-making, interviewing techniques, solution-based casework, principles of child development, applicable federal and state laws, and community resources.
  • Experience assessing risk and safety concerning child abuse and neglect or developing safety or service plans with families.
  • Familiarity with community resources and the local community.
  • Ability to organize information to meet FamLink documentation requirements.

Incumbent must hold a valid driver’s license when operating a state or privately owned vehicle on official state business.

The incumbent must successfully complete formal training courses as required by law, policy, and regional requirements within one year of their appointment.

Degrees must be obtained from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or a foreign equivalent verified by a NACES-approved organization at naces.org.
