State of Utah is Hiring a NBS Mass Spectrometry Microbiologist/Chemist II Near Salt Lake, UT

NBS Mass Spectrometry Microbiologist II
Do you have any experience with laboratory testing? Do you want to make a difference in public health? If this is you, then the Utah Public Health Laboratory (UPHL) needs you as a Newborn Screening Microbiologist. In this role you will perform biochemical and molecular newborn screening testing. UPHL is CLIA certified. You will need to meet the CLIA requirements (found HERE) to work in this position.
  • Continued employment may be contingent upon the successful completion of a fingerprinting background check.
  • Due to the nature and types of testing samples this position requires compliance with the Utah Department of Health & Human Services Employee Immunization policy.
  • This is an in-office only position and a teleworking option is not available.
Principal Duties
A a Newborn Screening Microbiologist II you will perform and support daily screening of newborns for serious but rare and mostly treatable health conditions at birth. This includes:
  • Participating in all high complexity testing functions, including clinical testing with clinical auto-analyzers, analysis and usage of mass spectrometers, molecular testing including quantitative PCR based screening assays, PCR based tests, next-generation sequencing based tests, hemoglobin analysis by isoelectric focusing and HPLC methods
  • Managing inventory control
  • Maintaining instruments and equipment
  • Punching blood clots using high-throughput punching equipment
  • Documenting all activities to meet CLIA requirements
  • Preparing specimens for laboratory analysis following appropriate guidelines and procedures
  • Analyzing and testing newborn dried blood spots (NBS)
  • Reviewing results for mass spectrometry, HPLB, hemoglobin variants by IEF, real-time PCR and DELFIA based assays
  • Reviewing and/or inspecting work for quality, accuracy, and completeness
  • Staying current with all laboratory SOPs
  • Other duties as assigned
Ideal Candidate
  • Has experience with mass spectrometry, biochemical, and/or molecular testing applications
  • Has a Bachelor's degree or higher in chemistry, biochemistry, toxicology, biology, or medical technology
  • Is motivated and has attention to detail
  • Can support high-throughput testing
  • Can read and understand technical writings and apply acquired knowledge

Health Insurance - Public Employee Health Program (PEHP):

Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS):

  • Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.

  • Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System. 

    • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))

    • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.

Paid Time Off:

  • Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).
