LOCATION OF (1) POSITION TO BE FILLED: DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE, AUDIT DIVISION, DAVIDSON COUNTY

This position is designed to work from home about 80%.


Qualifications

Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and one of the following: two years of experience in professional-level accounting, auditing, tax-related civil-legal experience, or tax consulting; or two years of experience as a Tax Auditing Associate* or one year of experience as a Tax Auditor Intermediate* in the Tennessee Department of Revenue.

Substitution of an Associate's Degree and Experience for the Bachelor's Degree: An associate's degree with a major in accounting and one year of experience in professional-level accounting or auditing may be substituted for the required bachelor's degree.

Substitution of Graduate Education or Licensure for Experience: Twenty-four semester (thirty-six quarter) graduate coursework hours in accounting or business administration or licensure as a Certified Public Accountant may substitute for one year of the required experience in professional-level accounting, auditing, tax-related civil-legal experience, or tax consulting.

Substitution of Experience for Education: Qualifying full-time professional accounting or auditing experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of four years.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Applicants for this class may be required to possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator¿s license and personal vehicle insurance.

Examination Method: Education and Experience, 100%, for Preferred Service positions.

Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for professional auditing work of average difficulty involving the examination and audit of individual and corporate tax documents to determine tax liability.This is the working-level class in the Tax Auditor sub-series in that members of this class independently perform professional tax audit work of average difficulty. This class differs from the Tax Auditor Intermediate* in that the latter functions at the intermediate level and performs professional auditing work of routine difficulty. This class differs from the Tax Auditor Expert in that the latter perform professional tax audit work of considerable difficulty and lead other professional tax auditors.

Responsibilities

  • Applies critical thinking and problem-solving techniques in audit work.
  • Plans and prioritizes work, schedules appointments, and meets goals or deadlines to maximize continuous workflow.
  • Collects detailed tax information, verify completeness of records through reconciliations in order to compute tax liability in accordance with Department of Revenue policy and procedure for office or field audits.
  • Pursues knowledge in new tax areas by attending departmental training and ongoing coaching.
  • Prepares audit reports that explain the procedures and findings of the audits to the taxpayer which includes attending taxpayer conferences to define the scope of their records in both written and oral form. Cites Tennessee state tax law and Department of Revenue positions and record objections from the taxpayer.
  • Prepares tax audit correspondence including responding to inquiries about tax liability and tax law for internal and external customers.
  • Applies best practices for evaluating taxpayer information to determine tax compliance.
  • Applies and utilizes policies, procedures, and resources to select or recommend potential taxpayers for audit.
  • May participate in tax conferences where the taxpayer has disputed the findings and seeks administrative remedies.
  • May lead and/or train tax auditors in the collection of detailed tax information, the determination of tax issues and taxpayer liability. May monitor the progress of lower-level auditors.
  • May identify forms which need revision or development to be consistent with law or more efficient processing procedures.
  • May identify trends or recurring issues identified in data or audits performed.

  • Skilled in training, coaching and motivating Tax Auditing Associates and Intermediates to increase knowledge and proper application of departmental policy, tax law, audit techniques, and audit procedures. [Motivating Others]

TN Driver Standards

State of Tennessee positions that may involve driving responsibilities require candidates to meet the following minimum driver qualifications:

  • A valid driver's license
  • For the past five years, the candidate's driver record must not have record of the following violations: driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, more than 4 moving violations.
