State of North Carolina is Hiring a Landscape Gardener Near Raleigh, NC

Recruitment Range: $50,000 - $57,000 Annually
The Legislative Complex, distinguished by its architecture and constructed in 1963, is where the North Carolina General Assembly (NCGA) conducts legislative business. The Legislative Complex is composed of the State Legislative Building, the Legislative Office Building, and the Legislative Complex grounds. The Facility Maintenance department falls under the nonpartisan Central Staff and plays an essential role in sustaining the reputable appearance and preservation of the Legislative Complex.
The Facility Maintenance department is seeking an experienced professional to fill the role of Landscape Gardener. This position plans and executes landscaping operations, maintains all interior and exterior plants, sustains the indoor and outdoor waterfalls, and constructs elaborate horticultural arrangements for the numerous interior, hanging, and rooftop gardens located throughout the Legislative Complex grounds. The Landscape Gardener must be comfortable operating lawn maintenance equipment in compliance with standard safety practices and procedures. The individual in this position must be reliable, safety conscious, and possess a strong work ethic. The ideal candidate for this position will be creative with an eye for detail, organized, flexible, and have the ability to work independently or as part of a team. The Landscape Gardener works under the general supervision of the Facility Manager.
Examples of Duties
  • Develops landscaping designs, selects appropriate seasonal plants, and installs arrangements for the Legislative Complex and building interior.
  • Maintains Legislative Complex grounds by fertilizing, weeding, raking, pruning, and spraying trees and shrubs.
  • Collaborates with the Department of Administration and various contractors for lawn and hedge maintenance.
  • Confers with nursery owner concerning plant adaptability, accepted usage, sources of supply, and cost and maintenance.
  • Maintains irrigation system, including cleaning and winterizing system.
  • Removes snow and ice on complex grounds as necessary for inclement weather.
  • Organizes, cleans, and purchases proper landscaping tools.
  • Orders and purchases plants annually.
  • Assists in holiday installations as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Practical knowledge of effective methods of grounds maintenance, plant selection and cultivation, and equipment maintenance.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain work relationships.
  • Must be able to perform the physical demands of the job for extended periods of time, including lifting up to fifty pounds.
  • Ability to operate an automated irrigation system.
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate and two years of post-secondary training or direct experience in landscaping design and horticultural and grounds maintenance.
