Job Description:
Hiring for a male-only position.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions, which house approximately 5,200 inmates, statewide. The departments focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). DUTIES:
Transports or oversees the transportation of inmates who leave the facility on any form of transportation into the community. Maintain the safe and secure movement of inmate transfers within or out of state. Communicate inmate transportation with other state and county agencies. Performs searches of inmate’s person, vehicle, property, and areas for contraband. Monitor inmates in a wide variety of situations and activities. Monitor inmates from any facility assigned to a community hospital. Enforces agency rules and regulations governing the conduct of inmates. Conducts and evaluates on-the-job training for newly assigned Corrections Corporals or temporary Corrections Officers, if applicable. Documents inmate behavior, status, and movement. Operates or monitors the operation of manual, computerized and/or electronically controlled security equipment, maintaining controlled movement of inmates, staff members and the public. Maintains all daily control documentation, i.e. logs, counts, etc. Serve warrants and detainers on all wanted persons in the system. Computes estimated costs for inmate transportation. Report, schedule, or arrange for maintenance of vehicles or security equipment. Recommends improvements to security procedures when appropriate.
Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: At least 18 years of age, high school education or equivalent, a valid driver’s license and must be able to legally possess a firearm and ammunition.
Other: Inmate privacy issue involved in the duty assignments require the position to be filled by male staff members only. Must have at least one year of correctional experience. Applicant must pass a criminal background check. Applicants accepting the job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.
Knowledge of: Correctional facility rules and regulations governing the conduct of inmates; correctional facility post orders and regulations governing the conduct of corrections custody staff members; general security and emergency procedures established by the facility.
Ability to: Read, understand, and enforce rules governing the conduct of the inmates; control inmates, via verbal and/or physical means, in a variety of settings within a correctional facility and in the community; communicate effectively with other staff, the public and the inmates; respond quickly and effectively to situations which threaten the security of the facility; effectively lead subordinate Corrections Officers, if applicable.
Skill in: the use of all necessary security equipment (some computerized), accurate and effective use of the weapons; the use of effective self-defense methods; written expression, so that all written material can be easily interpreted.
