Job Description:

Pay range is $17.960 - $26.476 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.

This position is classified as a Highway Materials and Tests Technician II. If unable to fill at the II level, will consider applicants at the Highway Materials and Tests Technician I level (pay rate for this level of classification is $16.008 per hour).

Job Duties:

  • Travel the state and perform field testing during exploratory borings, including sample logging, collection, and preservation.
  • Perform and assist in drilling operations for mud slurry-drilling and hollow stem drilling.
  • Assist in the clearing of utilities, meeting with property owners, surveying, water level monitoring, and closure of boreholes.
  • Log soil boring and record sample information, create geologic profile, and obtain samples of undisturbed soil specimens (Shelby tubes) for use in laboratory testing.
  • Provide highway traffic control during drill rig mobilization on project sites.
  • Use survey equipment to obtain the elevation of boring locations.
  • Perform equipment preventative maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
Highway Materials and Tests Technician II level: Experience in highway construction inspection, materials testing, or similar material laboratory operations.
Highway Materials and Tests Technician I level: No specific education, training, or experience is required for entry to this class.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Field construction experience.
  • Experience working with drilling equipment.
  • Experience operating construction equipment.
  • Experience in soil exploration.
  • Class A CDL.
Other:
  • A valid driver's license is required and possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire is also required.
  • Requires overnight and out-of-town travel for up to four days a week.
  • The work week is four, ten-hour days with Fridays off (may occasionally have to work on a Friday).
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES
  • Computer experience with Microsoft Word & Excel.
  • Ability to operate small hand tools and equipment.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 80 pounds, use hand tools and work under adverse conditions such as extreme heat or cold, in or near the path of moving vehicles or difficult terrain.
  • Ability to use a handheld GPS device to locate boring locations.
