State of Missouri is Hiring a Watershed Protection Section Chief - 4120400 Near Jefferson, MO

Salary: $2,800 - $3,000 semi-monthly

Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of Environmental Quality, Water Protection Program, and will be located at Lewis and Clark State Office Building, 1101 Riverside Drive, Jefferson City, Missouri 65101

Why you’ll love this position:

You’ll be leading the Watershed Protection Section, where science and policy meet to protect Missouri’s waterways. You’ll work with a diverse group of team members and stakeholders to monitor, assess, protect, and restore water quality in Missouri’s streams, rivers, and lakes. You will also be responsible for reviewing and revising Missouri’s Water Quality Standards regulation to ensure appropriate protection of these valuable resources.

What you’ll do:

  • Direct, supervise and participate in the activities of the Watershed Protection Section, which includes managing five statewide water quality functional programs – water quality monitoring, assessment of water quality, modeling of waters and permitted discharges, development of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) and TMDL Implementation Plans, and revisions and implementation of Missouri’s Water Quality Standards
  • Direct and indirect supervision of 17 technical and one support team members. This includes performance planning and Engage, individual conferences, budgeting, training, review of work products, and delegation
  • Coordinate activities of the Watershed Protection Section within the Water Protection Program, the Division of Environmental Quality, as well as other state and federal agencies
  • Assist in the development of work plans and agreements with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Geological Survey, Missouri Department of Conservation, the University of Missouri, and other agencies, and with the Regional Offices, Environmental Services Program, Missouri Geological Survey, Water Resources Center, and other divisions and programs within the department, as needed;
  • Develop and amend regulations and guidance documents as needed, working with key stakeholder groups and the public to gain support and informed consent for these decisions;
  • Support the nonpoint source grant program, reviewing watershed management plans, and managing and allocating 319 and 604(b) funds
  • Review and coordinate grants and grant proposals related to the section’s work, and related work of the program; and
  • Support the Clean Water Commission activities and initiatives as requested and take part in Clean Water Commission proceedings to the extent necessary.

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 6 or more years of relevant experience (substitutions may be allowed)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred degree in environmental or physical sciences
  • Ability to lead highly technical and productive team members
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week with a flexible schedule
  • Ability to travel, hold a valid driver’s license
  • Familiar with state and federal Clean Water Law and their implementing regulations
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Existing writing skills and the ability to review and revise complex technical documents
