State of Missouri is Hiring an Urban Outreach Coordinator - 7040008 Near St. Louis, MO

Salary Range: $1,962.28 – $2070.21 semi-monthly

Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks, Grants, Recreation & Interpretation Program; and is located at the Saint Louis Area Office, which is physically located at 2650 Delmar Blvd, Saint Louis, MO 63103, in the same complex as the Scott Joplin House State Historic Site.

In this position, through planning and implementing outreach and engagement programs, you will ignite the curiosity of diverse communities within Saint Louis’ urban core about the many mental and physical health benefits of our Missouri state parks and historic sites.

What you’ll do:

  • Partner with community and Saint Louis area stakeholders to enhance and create programming that supports the Missouri State Park mission and that encourages underrepresented and under-resourced audiences to explore the natural world, to learn about the diverse history and culture of Missouri, and experience the health benefits of being outside.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with a variety of local and state recreation providers, school districts, community organizations, libraries, Missouri Parks Association, and other advocacy organizations.
  • Collaborate with state parks and historic sites in the eastern region of the state on outreach and programming needs; and provide facility-specific programming, event and special project support.
  • Engage in strategic planning to identify underserved communities in the eastern half of the state, identify community organizations that represent diverse populations with whom to establish partnerships, and provide recommendations for expanding outreach programming.
  • Provide supervisory oversight of seasonal workers, interns and community volunteers.
  • Manage unit budget, including administration of grant funds received, tracking expenditures, following state procurement rules, and completing required grant and budget reporting.

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 15 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Environmental, Biological or Natural Sciences, Natural Resources, Resource Management, History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Parks and Outdoor Recreation, Urban Studies, Multicultural and Diversity Studies, Communications, Public Relations, Community Studies or a closely related field; and
  • Two-four (2-4) years of experience in research, development and/or presentation of interpretive and educational programs in a park, historic site or museum; management of natural and/or cultural resources; researching and/or presenting information relating to artifacts or archaeological sites; teaching science or history; taken part in community outreach/engagement; or comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in the above specified areas is preferred. (Earned graduate credit hours from an accredited college or university in the specified areas may substitute on a year-for-year basis for a maximum of two years of the required experience at a rate of 24 earned graduate credit hours for one year of experience.)
  • A bilingual speaker is preferred, in English and a second language.
  • Position requires strong public speaking and presentation skills, with an extensive understanding of the principles of interpretation (e.g. Tilden’s Six Principles and/or certification through the National Association for Interpretation). Interpretation certification through a professional organization such as the National Association for Interpretation, National Park Service, or a similar program is preferred.
  • Position requires excellent writing skills including report writing, interpretive content and other educational writing.
  • Position requires working some evenings, holidays, weekends, and potentially overtime when necessary for special events, meetings or trainings.
  • Position also requires heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.) during the course of an event or program and being able to tolerate working outside in all weather conditions.
  • Position requires the ability to achieve and maintain certification in First Aid/CPR.
