State of Missouri is Hiring a Specialized Trades Worker - 7040303 Near Ballwin, MO

Salary: $1,579.06 - $1,610.64 (semi-monthly) * Salary will be based on education and/or experience

Job Location/Shift: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks, and will be located at Castlewood State Park, 1401 Kiefer Creek Rd, Ballwin Missouri. Typical work schedule will be Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (1/2 hour lunch break) with the requirement to work weekends on a rotating basis with three other full-time staff. A flexible work schedule during the off-season is possible. Shifts may vary with the time of year and in order to meet the needs of the facility. Must also be able to work weekends or evenings depending on holidays, emergencies, special events.

What you’ll do:

  • This is skilled work in facility maintenance, grounds maintenance, construction and repair of buildings, routine cleaning of structures, trail maintenance and operation of facility.
  • Lead worker for maintenance crew of two full time team member, seasonal staff (varies but up to 4) and park volunteers. Under the supervision of park leadership, set goals, assign tasks and review the work and give input on crew performance.
  • Perform, oversee and ensure completion of routine preventive maintenance and necessary repairs to vehicles, heavy equipment, tractors, ZTR mowers, pull-behind mowing decks, SUVs, golf carts, chainsaws, weed trimmers, push mowers and power tools. Conduct monthly safety meetings and provide individual training as necessary before use. Monitor vehicle and equipment use to ensure safety protocols are followed and unit performance is optimal. Employee will maintain maintenance, training and safety meeting records, operation manuals and warranty papers.
  • Direct and perform facility maintenance and upkeep according to facility plans, including vehicle and equipment maintenance, groundskeeping, buildings and structures maintenance, infrastructure and trails maintenance. Direct and perform routine inspections and collect information for facility reporting. Identify and remove dangerous trees as prescribed in tree management policy. Conduct playground inspections. Identify and report risk management concerns. Respond to emergency needs when contacted.
  • Lead or participate in construction projects or facility repairs including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting and masonry work. Diagnose, oversee or perform routine, technical and complex repairs to heating, air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration systems. Research, estimate, acquire bids and/or purchase materials for specific projects or repairs as needed.
  • Purchase operating supplies, parts and project materials as necessary. Monitor inventory to ensure no supply shortages and provide list of needs for purchase orders.
  • Assist with stewardship of resources, both natural and cultural. Participate in controlled burns, invasive plant removal and other resource management related projects.
  • Perform customer service tasks such as answering questions from the public, checking answering machine, returning phone calls and updating the park status map as needed.

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Four to six years of experience in a variety of trade areas including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, concrete and masonry, painting, plastering, and mechanical repair (substitutions may be allowed)

Preferred Qualifications and Experience/Special Job Requirements

  • Possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license is required
  • Ability to become familiar with and follow all procurement rules and procedures and park rules, regulations, procedures and policies.
  • Ability to attend mandatory and other trainings to learn new or enhance existing skills.
  • Ability to communicate openly and effectively with the public, external stakeholders, supervisors and subordinates.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical outdoor work, able to walk on uneven terrain for extended periods of time, able to perform duties in rugged terrain, lift and load 50 to 75 pound objects repeatedly, walk and work on roofs, operate equipment for extended timeframes such as mowers, tractors, trimmers and backpack blowers and climb ladders.
  • This position will be required to have Level 1 Prescribed Fire Training. If you do not have equivalent training, you will be given 12 months from the appointment date to obtain the necessary training. As a park employee you will perform routine duties and/or assist with controlled burns or wildfire.
  • This position may be required to obtain and maintain appropriate water/wastewater certifications, and/or other required licenses/certification. If required and if you do not currently possess this license/certification, you will be given six months to obtain necessary license/certification.
