State of Missouri is Hiring a Railroad Safety Inspector Series Near Jefferson, MO

This position will be filled at a salary no higher than the posted maximum salary.

Substitution of education for the experience requirement will be considered.

The selected candidate has the flexibility to work from any location within the State of Missouri.

Job Location: Jefferson City, MO

The railroad safety inspector conducts routine Federal and state motive power and equipment and grade crossing inspections. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

What you’ll do:

  • Conducts compliance inspections to ensure carriers maintain safe operations under federal and state regulations.
  • Conducts complaint investigations; obtains data from carriers, conducts interviews, on-site inspections, reviews records and other agency reports; develops a resolution process and prepares a close-out report; works with carriers, citizens, legislators, union representatives and other local, state and federal agencies to resolve issues.
  • Conducts safety inspections of railroad property, including carrier facilities, rolling stock and other equipment.
  • Conducts accident investigations to determine root cause; works independently or as a team member to conduct unassisted or joint investigations with law enforcement, federal investigators or carrier officials.
  • Works with state, federal and local law enforcement officials and carriers to support the secure movement of people and goods by establishing processes to identify threats and vulnerabilities to the rail network.
  • Reviews railroad crossings to ensure compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Federal Railroad Administration, and state requirements; conducts final inspections and completes proper paperwork.
  • Acts as duty officer on a rotating basis for incidents outside of normal work hours; receives preliminary information and conducts follow-up calls to the reporting carrier, federal, state, and/or local agencies to initiate investigation procedures and determine whether on-site investigation is necessary.
  • Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED/HiSET
  • Federal Railroad Administration Certification as a motive power and equipment inspector is preferred.
  • Two years of professional or technical experience in railroad construction, maintenance or operating practices; or highway-rail grade-crossing signal construction or maintenance; or regulatory compliance or enforcement; or related areas.
  • Successful completion of a Range of Motion examination.

Special Working Conditions:

  • Job requires regular, statewide, overnight travel.
  • Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
  • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
