Title: Part-Time Grain Inspection Worker

Scheduled Hours: Part Time Variable-potentially Monday – Friday, 7am – 5pm

Salary: $17.00/Hr

General Information

The Missouri Department of Agriculture, Grain Inspection and Warehousing Division has a part-time Grain Sampler/Technician position in the Grandview, MO and Pleasant Hill, MO area.

Shifts are available up to 5 days a week between the hours of 7am - 5pm, Monday through Friday. Scheduling is done on a case-by-case basis, and is flexible. Depending on business need, employees could work 1 to 5 days a week based on availability.

Employees are expected to have reliable transportation to the office in Raytown or work sites in the area (Grandview, Pleasant Hill). If the employee chooses to go to the office in Raytown, they will have access to a state vehicle for transportation to work sites from there. Or the employee may choose to drive directly to the work site (mileage is notreimbursed).

Starting salary for this part-time position is $17.00 an hour. Employees in this position have the ability to earn an additional $2/hour if work extends outside of normal business hours.

About the Position

This is semi-skilled manual work in the grain inspection program of the Department of Agriculture. An employee in this class obtains grain samples and inspects carriers prior to loading of grain. Work is performed under the supervision from a Grain Inspector or other designated superior until trained. The employee receives training in sampling and technician procedures established by the Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS), and must demonstrate proficiency before solitary work may be performed.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent. Work experience may be substituted for deficiency in the required education.

Special Requirements

  • Have consistent & reliable means of communication (mobile phone preferred)
  • Have consistent & reliable means of transportation, including occasionally in inclement weather
  • Ability to obtain USDA/FGIS licenses to sample and process grain within established timeframes
  • Must have a valid Missouri Driver's License

Job Duties

  • Receive on-the-job training in the FGIS grain sampling and technician procedures
  • Read and comprehend complex policies and procedures, and obtain all of the necessary federal licensing within required timeframe
  • Obtain representative samples of grain utilizing procedures specified by the Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS)
  • Complete sample pan tickets and work records legibly, accurately, and efficiently
  • Maintain vehicles, sampling and lab equipment, and work environments properly
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, grain businesses, others in the grain trade and the general public
  • Perform other related work as assigned

While employees in this position are expected to work a semi-regular shift between the hours of 7am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, these specific hours are not guaranteed. There may be occasions where 1 or fewer weekly shifts are available, and occasions where employees may be requested to work outside of these hours. Supervisors work with employees on their availability.

Physical Considerations

Employees in this position must be able to:

  • Regularly work in a grain elevator environment that may include factors such as loud noise, foul air, grain dust, inclement weather, extreme heights and moving machinery
  • Distinguish subtle differences in color
  • Detect subtle changes in odor
  • Occasionally work from heights, including the ability to climb stairs and ladders
  • Frequently lift a minimum of 15 pounds, and occasionally lift 50 pounds to a height of five feet with reasonable accommodations
  • Sit or stand for extended periods (several hours)

Employees in this position may be ineligible for hire if they, their spouse, their minor children, or any relative immediately residing in their household is employed by or otherwise receives direct or indirect financial consideration from any grain elevator or warehouse, or engage in the merchandising, storage, commercial transportation, or other commercial handling of grain.
