  • Job Summary:

    The Marshal’s Office is a law enforcement and security unit that operates under the authority of the Supreme Court of Missouri. Deputy marshals serve court orders, warrants, and help protect the personnel, property and records of the Court with honesty and integrity. In this responsible position, deputy marshals assist the marshal in the implementation of efficient security procedures and protocols. They work with the marshal to ensure the safety of the Supreme Court judges and staff, and others located in the Supreme Court building. In addition, the deputy marshals serve execution of court orders and arrest warrants. This position also assists the Supreme Court marshal in working in cooperation with local, state and federal law enforcement authorities. Working evenings, weekends and holidays may be required as necessary.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Deputy marshal services:
      • Bailiff during Court proceedings;
      • Serves court documents;
      • Coordinates the transfer of offenders;
      • Assists in the planning and coordination of the Court’s emergency preparedness;
      • Maintains official reports and records.
    • Building and Security
      • Helps ensure the security of the Supreme Court building, property and grounds;
      • Utilizes surveillance and security systems;
      • Screens visitors and packages;
      • Monitors Court parking lots;
      • De-escalates confrontations;
      • Investigates complaints of alleged violations;
      • Responds to fire and intrusion alarms in the Court building;
      • Assists building occupants during evacuation procedures
      • Advises employees of hazardous weather conditions
      • Provides first aid when necessary.
    • Executive Protection:
      • Provides security for judges and staff at offsite events;
      • Provide transportation to and from court events;
      • Conduct advance site security assessments;
    • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with Missouri law enforcement techniques.
  • Proficient in computer applications and ability to learn new software as required.
  • Excellent communication skills in both emergent and non-emergent.
  • Must be able to identify potential security risks.
  • Must be able to act, based on training and policy, when presented with a security risk.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two or more years as a commissioned law enforcement officer in a federal, state, county, or municipal law enforcement agency with the power to arrest; OR
  • A military veteran with comparable military training and experience; OR
  • Comparable training and experience in the private sector.
  • A degree in criminal justice or law enforcement is preferred.
  • Previous executive protection experience desired.

Special Requirements - A Supreme Court deputy marshal shall maintain:

  • A valid Missouri vehicle operator’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • A valid peace officer license pursuant to chapter 590, RSMo.
  • Any necessary permit to carry a firearm legally within Missouri.
  • Certification in first aid, CPR and using an AED from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association or other nationally-recognized organization.
  • Operational proficiency with security equipment, including firearms and other defensive weapons, screening equipment, surveillance systems, and emergency notification systems.
  • Annual weapons qualifications. A deputy marshal must be armed at all times while on duty.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks, such as pursuing fleeing individuals and restraining individuals who resist, under possibly hazardous conditions or situations.
