**Job Description:**

**Job Summary:** Overview of position and its purpose.

This position is for an IT Analyst 3 in the High Performance Computing (HPC) group in the Information Technology Services Department at LSU. The HPC group supports advanced research computing and data needs of more than 300 research groups at LSU and across the State of Louisiana. HPC resources include 1,500 servers in five supercomputers, three of which, when launched, ranked among the fastest in higher education in the world, massive research data storage devices, and ultra high-speed Infiniband networks. The HPC IT Analyst 3 is responsible for enabling both existing and emerging high performance computing solutions and facilitating computational research projects on HPC clusters through direct technical support and training of the research communities of the State of Louisiana and their collaborators. All Information Technology Services employees are expected to demonstrate a commitment to exemplary customer service in all facets of their work.

**Job Responsibilities:**

1. Customer Support: Provide consulting services to LSU researchers in regard to the selection of research computing and data resources and scientific applications, the integration of LSU HPC resources and services into their research workflows, and the efficient use of LSU HPC resources. Provide technical support to the researchers using LSU HPC resources. This includes, but is not limited to, troubleshooting system-related errors or issues, identifying and fixing bugs and "hot spots" in scientific applications, advising users on best practices using LSU HPC resources, and providing assistance to computational workflow development and deployment. Develop, present, and regularly update training materials in various forms such as Jupyter notebooks and R markdown documents, regarding advanced research computing topics such as AI/deep learning techniques, parallelization of numerical algorithms, GPU programming, and HPC containers. Provide outreach to create awareness with faculty, students, and others about LSU and partner HPC resources and services. (50%)

2. Operations: Perform system- and node-level hardware benchmarks and collaborate with system administrators to find configuration parameters optimize both intra- and inter-node performance. Plan and maintain the scientific software stack on HPC clusters, including but not limited to quantum chemistry, bioinformatics, molecular dynamics, multiphysics, mathematical, deep learning/AI, and HPC utility tools and libraries. Benchmark and fine-tune application performance with optimal compiler flags and software settings. (20%)

3. Research: Investigate and evaluate the impact of new technologies on LSU's research effort. Develop and implement new, high-impact technologies such as science gateways that "appliancize" scientific applications and support decoupled, web-based workflow setup and execution. Document procedures related to newly implemented technologies and train other group members. Collaborate with LSU researchers to develop computational research projects and funding proposals. (20%)

4. Other duties as assigned. (10%)

**Minimum Qualifications:**

Education Level: Bachelor's in Computational Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related computationally intensive degree

Specific Experience: 3 years of experience working on computational research projects utilizing large and complex HPC systems.

Substitute: A Ph.D. in Computational Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related computationally intensive degree will substitute for 2 years of experience and the specific degree

**Preferred Qualifications:**

Education Level: Ph.D. in Computational Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related computationally intensive disciplines.

Specific Experience: Five years of experience working on computationally complex and intensive research projects utilizing large HPC systems. Advanced knowledge of programming languages such as Fortran, C/C , Python, R, Perl, and bash. Advanced knowledge of parallel programming with openMP, MPI, CUDA, and openACC. User knowledge of HPC cluster queuing systems such as PBS and SLURM. Ability to assist users with all aspects of successfully running parallel jobs on HPC clusters. Ability to benchmark HPC systems and scientific applications. Version control tools such as SVN or git.
