ABOUT THIS POSITION
The District Sign Specialist position is located in DOTD District 62 and perform and oversee basic sign installation, replacement, and maintenance of signs on all State and Federal highways in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). These specialists are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and must perform their duties in all types of weather. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as required and attend continuing education classes as deemed necessary.
The incumbent is required to possess the following specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, as well as to maintain the following license.
  • A minimum lifting capability of 50 pounds will be required for this position
  • Subject to random drug testing
 
District Sign Specialist 1 - $17.18/ HR
No experience or training is required.

Candidates not possessing a Chauffer’s License (Class D) at the time of hire can be employed and will be notified in writing that documented proof of possession of the necessary permanent Chauffeurs license must be provided as a condition of employment during the probationary period 
(LA DOTD Probationary Period 12- 24 months)
District Sign Specialist 2 -$19.67/ HR
Two years of experience in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices.
(Must possess a valid Class D Chauffeur's License at time of appointment.)

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from District Sign Specialist 2 by the absence of experienced level District Sign Specialist responsibilities.
Differs from other maintenance jobs by the presence of duties specializing in sign installation and maintenance.75% Performs all sign installation, replacement, and maintenance on all State highways in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). This includes highway signing, construction signing, road closure, barricades, warning, and other permanent and temporary signing. Determines exact placement requirements for speed zones, weight limits and other regulatory signing by interpreting legal orders with established regulations. May perform installations, replacement and maintenance of all pavement markings on all state highways in accordance with the MUTCD. This includes stop bars, arrows, legends, and other pavement markers. Determines the exact placement requirements for pavement markers as per the department's policy and specific guidelines. Cleans signs and performs discriminative tree and limb cutting to clear obscured signs.
I 0% Maintains electronic daily work reports (including GPS readings of sign locations), material used reports, truck inventory, and pavement marker inventory.
5% Maintains, transports, and programs changeable/portable message boards as needed. Operates and maintains all equipment including sign truck, small tools, etc., to perform duties.
5% Obtains training which is listed in PPM #59 (Workforce Development) for this position as well as additional training required by the Section Head, supervisor, and/or DSS Leader.
5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities. This position will ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the crew which may consist of entering GPS data into database and assisting the striping crew with traffic control.
