The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-minded, and service-oriented team player to fill a Corrections Law Library Assistant (CLLA) position.

  • The CLLA provides extensive reference, instructional, and research services. The person in this position will train and supervise Individuals in Custody law clerks;
  • provide law library services to patrons and staff; develop and maintain the institutional law library; support facility programs and services;
  • and maintain library order and security. The ideal candidate for this position will be a team-oriented individual who is able to adapt to the changing needs of a dynamic, institutional library;

Essential Function 1

Trains and supervises offender library law clerks in the use of legal library resources to provide assistance sought by offender library users.

1. Provides assistance to library users directly in making effective use of the law library to perform their own legal research.

2. Provides instructional sessions and / or workshops in the use of law library resources.

Essential Function 2

Receives / reviews offender requests for assistance in the use of the institution law library.

1. Assigns each request for assistance to the appropriate offender law clerk.

2. Monitors such assignments to verify that assistance was provided insures timely fair offender access to library and library services.

3. Available for staffing of the library to maintain service hours.

4. Maintains library order and security.

5. Provides law library services to offenders without access to the law library.

Essential Function 3

Explains court procedures and filing requirements without providing interpretations of substantive matters of law.

1. Verifies, locates, and obtains law library materials not held in the institution's collection.

2. Conduct legal research for offenders and to provide assistance in drafting, to the extent such activities do not involve the exercise of independent legal judgment.

3. Does not represent offenders in litigation.

Essential Function 4

Develops and maintains the institution law library.

1. Prepares statistical reports detailing law library use.

2. May provide Notary services.

Minimum Qualifications 1

Requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with coursework in such areas as legal, pre-legal, English, statistics or directly related coursework.

Preferred Qualifications 1

  • Prefers at least one (1) year of work experience working with case law.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working as a paralegal or in a law library setting.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience writing reports.
  • Prefers ability to analyze and organize facts, evidence, and precedents and to draft written material in a clear and logical format.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of work experience gathering statistical data.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience using a legal law library.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience receiving and reviewing library requests.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of work experience working in a library setting.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience assisting individuals with law library materials.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year supervisory experience.

Employment Condition 1

  • Requires certification as a Notary Public be obtained during probationary period and kept current while in the position.
  • Requires the ability to pass the IDOC / IDJJ background check.
  • Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
