We invite qualified applicants to apply for this trainee position within the Accounting Division at State Retirement Systems (SRS). This position is responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the postings to the SERS (State Employees Retirement System) member accounts. Specifically, the earnings, time worked, contributions, and service credit that make up an active member account posting are processed, analyzed, and reviewed by the staff of the Accounting Division. Errors made in the withholding of employee or pick-up contributions by payroll offices are audited by Accounting Division staff who then take the appropriate action of billing the member for underpaid retirement contributions or refunding the member (or agency) for overpaid retirement contributions. The ideal candidate should have an eye for detail, skill in mathematics and basic accounting principles, and exercise sound logic with strong problem-solving skills. SRS is conveniently located on the west side of Springfield with free parking on-site.

Position Essential Functions

Targeted Title: Accountant

  • Actively participates in the on-the-job training program, for a period of 6 to 12 months, designed to enhance the familiarity and broaden knowledge of the operations of the Accounting Division of the State Retirement Systems (SRS) as well as working knowledge of the broad range of professional accounting career disciplines.
  • Reviews the exceptions and errors regarding the retirement contributions, time worked, and wages subject to retirement contained on incoming payroll transactions from various agencies to ensure accuracy and completeness in maintaining and posting to the membership account.
  • Audits and reviews membership accounts with increasing difficulty for the purpose of gaining experience and developing knowledge in the contents and maintenance of the financial and related data contained on the SRS member accounts.
  • Assists in the review and preparation of billings or refunds to members or state agencies related to retirement contributions that have been under/over withheld. Assists in the preparation of the calculation for the purchase of qualifying and short periods, military service, repayment of refunds, and leaves of absences.
  • Performs other duties assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting or an allied field.
  • This class is included as an Upward Mobility Program credential title.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers ability to perform bookkeeping or accounting functions including financial reporting and tracking information.
  • Prefers ability to work with accounting receivable or a billing process.
  • Prefers work experience using Microsoft Excel.
  • Prefers ability to function as part of a team.
  • Prefers ability to communicate complex and controversial topics effectively.
