State of Georgia is Hiring a Program Specialist, School Health Near Atlanta, GA

Job Summary

The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE)-Office of Whole Child Supports is recruiting for an experienced Program Specialist, School Health. Under direct supervision of the School Health Program Manager, the Program Specialist, School Health will provide communication, support, technical assistance, and leadership to school nurses and school health professionals in the state of Georgia. This position will work collaboratively within the Office of Whole Child Supports and with the Student Health & Wellbeing Division to develop education opportunities, guidance, and recommendations that promote student and staff health and well-being. This position is designed to work in tandem with the Division of State Schools, Office of Federal Programs (Special Education), to ensure coordination of school health-related technical assistance, support, and training in all Georgia schools. Job responsibilities include but not limited to:

Description of Duties

  • Serve as a point of contact for school nurses for education and professional learning opportunities, and day-to-day support
  • Work collaboratively within the Office of Whole Child Supports to develop messaging and promote the connection between student health and educational outcomes through a variety of communication channels
  • Provide routine communication to school nurses regarding relevant policy and programmatic updates from the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE), Georgia Department of Public Health (GPDH) and other health partners
  • Develop and coordinate an annual plan for continuing education opportunities for school nurses and other school health-related staff
  • Assist with maintaining the GaDOE School Nurse Exchange and GaDOE Community School Nursing Group
  • Collaborate with school nurse leaders at the state level (GDPH, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Georgia Association of School Nurses) to develop unified communications regarding school nursing services and activities
  • Work with Special Education, State Schools, and Georgia Department of Public Health to implement and coordinate training for mass vision and hearing screenings
  • Work with Special Education to support School Nurses working with Special Education students through training and technical assistance
  • Serve as the point of contact for any telehealth-related programs and opportunities
  • Other duties as assigned with the school health/nursing program
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:
  • Experience with school health
  • Experience with pediatric nursing
  • Experience with coordinating and conducting mass vision and hearing screenings, as well as follow-up activities
  • Experience with developing professional learning/training in a variety of modalities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with, build collaboration and partnership with school administrators and educators, school health staff, principals, and healthcare organizations
  • Ability to lead, work independently, and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously, paying close attention to detail on many varied tasks; to exercise good judgment in analyzing situations and making decisions
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, including Excel and PowerPoint, as well as the ability to quickly learn new software programs and online platforms

****This is a remote/telework position based in Downtown Atlanta. Some statewide travel is required.

Master's degree in nursing, nursing administration, public health or directly related field from an accredited college or university AND One year in an administrative or supervisory capacity AND current Georgia license as a Registered Professional Nurse OR Bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited college or university AND Four years of experience as Registered Nurse, Two years of which in an administrative or supervisory capacity AND current Georgia license as a Registered Professional Nurse OR Eight years of experience as a Registered Nurse, Two years of which in an environment related to the area of assignment, Three years of which as a supervisor AND current Georgia license as a Registered Professional Nurse.
