POSITION SUMMARY:

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is seeking to fill a Senior Attorney position within the Office of General Counsel (OGC) in Tallahassee, Florida. The OGC works closely with the department’s Command Staff, regional Special Agents in Charge, and Program Directors to provide legal assistance and advice that is responsive to the specialized needs of the department, region or division.

The OGC serves the entire agency in many different capacities such as advising agents regarding ongoing criminal investigations and criminal intelligence gathering, arrest and search warrants, and interception of oral communications. The OGC also provides legal support to the various program areas within the department as well as providing training on a variety of criminal law and procedure topics for FDLE’s Special Agents.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary responsibilities are handling all legal issues related to the FDLE’s obligations under Chapter 119, Florida Statutes (Public Records Law) and Capital Post Conviction proceedings in death penalty cases under the rules of criminal procedure. Advises the Office of Open Government whose responsibilities include: coordinating the receipt, processing, and responses to public record requests received by FDLE and serves as FDLE’s primary point of contact for the public, attorneys, and the courts regarding public records issues.

Must have good computer skills, in particular, Microsoft Word, use of Adobe Acrobat, and PowerPoint. Must be an effective communicator and have a practical and workable understanding of the Florida criminal justice system, Florida Statutes, and the Florida Rules of Criminal and Civil Procedures. Must have the ability to effectively work under occasional stressful deadlines or circumstances. Must be able to clearly articulate and advocate one's position verbally and in writing.

The incumbent will occassionally be assigned legal training and presentation responsibilities.

Incumbent is based in Tallahassee in the FDLE Headquarters Building.

NOTE: Preference will be given to applicants with experience as a Florida criminal prosecutor and/or public records law experience and/or civil law experience.

To be considered as a potential candidate, you must meet the minimum qualifications(s) listed below. Degrees must be from an accredited college or university as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A member of the Florida bar for two or more years and a minimum of two years legal work experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Legal work experience as a Florida prosecutor (Assistant State Attorney or Assistant Statewide Prosecutor); Preference will be given to candidates with Florida criminal law experience.

SALARY:

  • $80,000.00 to $95,000.00, Commensurate with Experience

BACKGROUND:

FDLE requires an extensive background process of all recommended applicants. The elements of a background include: financial credit check, criminal history of applicant and applicant’s immediate family or roommates, personal references, employment and education verifications (which includes official transcript(s)), drug screen and fingerprinting. This information will be utilized to make the final hiring decision.

NOTES:

Preference will be given to current FDLE members who have satisfactorily completed at least six months of the probationary period for their current position.
