Open Competitive Public Health Nutritionist Your Specific ResponsibilitiesThe incumbent, a Public Health Nutritionist, is an employee of the Florida Department of Health in DeSoto County, representing the agency and its mission and values. The incumbent is part of the organization and is expected to promote cooperation, courtesy, and teamwork in a diverse environment. The position is under the direct supervision of the Senior Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor. The Public Health Nutritionist position will work directly with Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clients in Desoto County.
  • Completes nutrition assessments for low, high and medically high-risk Women, Infant and Children (WIC) clients to provide client-centered nutrition services. Documents nutrition care plan and identified nutrition risks using a standardized process. Provides Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (VENA) based nutrition assessment and counseling utilizing appropriate educational materials. Assess client’s readiness to change and help client choose appropriate goal(s). Maintain documentation of participant goal setting. Establishes appropriate number of subsequent individual nutrition education contacts. Evaluates and revises nutrition care plan as needed.
  • Documents each contact in Florida’s WIC Information System and Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) System (FL WiSE) in accordance with DHM 150-24 and FL WiSE User Manual. Assigns correct food packages according to client’s needs according to WIC policies and procedures in accordance with DHM 150-24. Issues EBT benefits and schedules future appointments as needed. In the absence of the Health Support Technician, obtains anthropometric and hematological measurements for WIC clients according to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and DHM 150-24. Enters health data into the WIC computer system and FL-WiSE.
  • As Breastfeeding Coordinator and Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator, provides breastfeeding support to women during the prenatal and postpartum period. Plans and develops ongoing staff breastfeeding trainings. Coordinates breastfeeding displays and bulletin boards promoting breastfeeding friendly WIC clinic environment. The incumbent is the Designated Breastfeeding Expert and is referred WIC clients by the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor that are yielded to the breastfeeding expert for breastfeeding complications.
  • Coordinates nutrition education services for assigned clients and makes referrals for appropriate services. Refers WIC participants to other Department of Health services, social service agencies, and community agencies.
Required Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the science and current practice of nutrition or dietetics.
  • Knowledge of the concepts and theories of nutrition or dietetics as it relates to growth, development, health, or disease.
  • Knowledge of nutritional and dietary assessment techniques.
  • Knowledge of the methods of compiling, organizing, and analyzing data.
  • Skill in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and computer navigation.
  • Skill in determining nutrition related needs of clients and how to respond to those needs.
  • Skill in analyzing and explaining rules, regulations, laws, policies, and standards.
  • Ability to use various communication channels to provide education/training to audiences of varying literacy and comprehension levels.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to learn and navigate Florida’s WIC Information System and EBT (Florida WiSE) computer application.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and evaluate a nutrition program or project.
  • Ability to learn and remain in compliance with all Florida Department of Health policies and internal operating procedures, Florida Statutes, and WIC Procedure Manual DHM 150-24, while completing job duties.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion. Incumbent may have access to records containing social security numbers in the performance of job duties.
QualificationsMinimum - Incumbent must possess a valid Florida Driver License or the ability to obtain one prior to hire. Incumbent must possess a bachelor’s or master’s in Nutrition Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics, or Public Health Nutrition. Incumbent must possess a valid Florida Dietitian/Nutritionist License or the ability to obtain one prior to hire.
