Introduction

DNREC's Delaware Mosquito Control Section provides statewide services to more than 900,000 residents and more than 7 million visitors annually to maintain quality of life and protect public health by reducing the possibility of mosquito-borne illnesses, such as West Nile virus. Summary Statement

The primary function of this year-round position is to provide advanced technical support to the state's tick program and lead biologist. This mainly involves field surveillance and collection of ticks along with taxonomic identification of these specimens to genus and species level via advance microscopy. Additional duties involve procuring and maintaining necessary field gear and scientific collection equipment, data entry and analysis, assisting in the preparation of outreach/education materials and technical reports as well as collaborating in authoring research publications in scientific journals.. Data collected from this tick program is important to understanding tick abundance, species composition and trends to in turn develop best management practices for protecting the public from tick bites and potential tick-borne illness. Applicant must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled (although these hours are more the exception than the norm).

Essential Functions

Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations. � Performs statistical analysis of data. � Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations. � Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents. � Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist I Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher�in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field. Knowledge of controlled sampling, monitoring and testing techniques. Knowledge of analyzing and evaluating data. Knowledge of technical report writing. Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
