  • New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

Description of Job

About the Position
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has an opening for an Accounting Technician III in our business office located in Denver. This position ensures that financial transactions are processed in an accurate and timely manner with the proper authorization and coding within legal parameters. This position applies the fiscal rules to all contracted and consultant payments and reviews all invoices against contracts and consultant task orders to make sure the fiscal rules are followed. This position monitors practices and procedures to comply with internal control procedures and ensures ongoing compliance with all relevant federal and state legislation, policies, procedures, and contractual terms affecting the assigned areas of responsibility.

Your duties and responsibilities
will include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Review, verify and calculate invoices. Apply funding strings to charge against and enter reported expense account information into SAP Financial System.
  • Administer the Commercial Card program for the Metro Denver area.
  • Apply State Fiscal Rules, policies, and procedures to reimbursements for accuracy and identify discrepancies.
  • Communicate with staff to advise and/or identify issues. Instruct and guide staff on appropriate changes or adjustments to apply.
    • Process invoices.
    • Review and investigate invoices or documentation provided by vendors and determine correct calculation of charges.
    • Apply correct financial coding for service entries or invoices presented.
    • Follow up on vouchers not processed through SAP properly and provide advice and training to PMs on correct documentation to be submitted.
  • Utilize SAP financial reporting system to prepare and develop financial reports for HQ Managers, providing detail of expenses by project.
  • Maintain several internal tracking systems for the Business Office.
  • Revise and update financial forms and tracking sheets.
  • Assist in maintaining internal procedures for the Accounts Payable Unit.
  • Assist in developing and utilizing business office filing system to ensure easy retrieval of all financial documentation by vendor and fiscal year.
  • Maintain files and coordinate with the team to ensure all records management procedures are followed according to CDOT policy and Federal regulations.
  • Ensure documents are properly uploaded in SAP and destruction policies are followed.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment:
  • Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday
  • Occasional travel throughout the state to give or receive training

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Experience Only:
  • At least three years of professional experience with a primary focus in technical accounting, such as accounts payable.
  • Experience working with spreadsheets and financial software is highly desirable.
  • Experience working within State Fiscal rules to support accounting or fiscal functions is highly desirable.

Experience & Education:
  • A combination of at least three years of experience and education that includes:
  • Coursework from a U.S. accredited college or university in Accounting, Audit, Budget, Finance, Mathematics, or a closely related field of study.
  • Professional work experience in technical accounting, such as accounts payable.
Education Only:
  • A bachelor's or master's degree from a U.S. accredited college or university in Accounting, Audit, Budget, Finance, Mathematics or a closely related field of study will substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access), Gmail and Google Applications, SAP, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
