Job Description

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 2 located in Ketchikan!
What you will be doing: 
The Assistant Area Biologist works collaboratively with the Area Biologists in Ketchikan and Petersburg on priority wildlife management and conservation issues and projects within Game Management Units (Units) 1A, 1B, 2, and 3. As a member of the Division of Wildlife Conservation (DWC), this position has the shared responsibility for a wide range of on-the-ground wildlife management responsibilities in Units 1A, 1B, 2, and 3. Under supervision of the Area Biologists this position coordinates with other local, State, and Federal agencies on a variety of wildlife topics and has lead management responsibility for Unit 2. The selected candidate will spend a significant amount of time working on Prince of Wales Island.

The working environment you can expect:
This Wildlife Biologist 2 is located in Ketchikan, AK. Field work includes spending extended time in a coastal temperate rainforest, flying in small aircraft, boating, handling large mammals, collecting biological samples, and other data. The majority of time in town is spent interacting with the public, responding to wildlife calls, analyzing data, and writing reports. Occasional public presentations are required in the Ketchikan, Prince of Wales Island, and at Board of Game meetings. The Ketchikan office is shared with other divisions and organized in an open layout to promote collaboration and communication.
Who we are looking for:
The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following desired strengths (All of these traits must be documented in your cover letter and applicant profile. If you do not have experience with one or more of these traits listed below, simply say so:)
  • Experience with conducting and managing inventory used to survey and monitor wildlife.
  • Education or work experience compiling, analyzing, and interpreting biological data.
  • Education or work-related experience in technical writing, including writing management, technical or peer reviewed papers.
  • Experience in public speaking and communication.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products; and experience with ArcGIS.
  • Physically able and willing to conduct low-level aerial survey flights from small aircraft; and experience conducting aerial wildlife surveys, including radio-telemetry.
  • Experience chemically immobilizing and handling ungulates or large predators.
  • Experience developing, initiating, and participating in cooperative wildlife management projects with government or non-government organizations, rural village residents, hunters, trappers, or other members of the public interested in wildlife management.

  • Requires the ability to pass firearms safety training and legally carry a firearm for wildlife safety.
Must be able to obtain and maintain:
  • Wildlife Chemical Immobilization Certification (Controlled Substance Act; US Code Title 21; CFR 1300)
  • Wildlife Capture and Handling Certification (Animal Welfare Act; Title 7, chapter 54 section 2131-2157; CFR Title 9, chapter 1)
  • CPR and First Aid training

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.
AND
One year of professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist experience is met by service as a Wildlife Biologist 1, Fishery Biologist 1, or Habitat Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitutions:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

A master's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry or natural resource management, will substitute for the required year of professional level biologist experience.

Special Note: “Upper division courses” means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline’s theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
