The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Subsistence is recruiting for a Subsistence Resource Specialist 2/3 positions located in Anchorage!
What you will be doing:
The Department of Fish and Game, Subsistence Section, is looking for a Subsistence Resource Specialist 3 to join our dynamic, social science research team. This is a permanent, full-time position that will lead Southern Region subsistence research projects. The incumbent will be responsible for the development, planning, implementation, and reporting on the human dimensions of subsistence activities and regulations in southwest Alaska. This work involves fieldwork in remote communities; research topics include the harvest and use of salmon and non-salmon fisheries, large land mammals, marine mammals, and vegetation, and the documentation of traditional knowledge. The incumbent will work under the direction of the Program Manager and in coordination with other Subsistence Resource Specialists to ensure quality and timely completion of priority tasks. The incumbent will also research, prepare, and present materials for regulatory review and will, on occasion, support Subsistence Section field research in other parts of the state.

This position plays a critical role in that mission by planning and leading data collection and reporting for the management of fish and game resources in the Southeast region of Alaska to ensure sustainable subsistence opportunities for area residents.

The working environment you can expect:
This position is located in the Anchorage ADF&G regional office (333 Raspberry Road). The incumbent will regularly interact with members of the public in a research capacity by coordinating with rural communities to plan, implement, and review research, and conducting fieldwork to collect harvest or traditional knowledge data. Additionally, the incumbent will regularly interact with colleagues at ADF&G or other agencies regarding the management of Alaska's subsistence resources. The office environment is dynamic with a focus on collaborative problem-solving, Fieldwork typically requires travel in small planes and boats away from the duty station for 1-2 weeks at a time multiple times per year.

  • Knowledge of subsistence in Alaska and a working knowledge of Alaska's diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines and carry out tasks in a timely fashion.
  • Experience collecting data using established social science methods, working with databases, preparing data analyses and summaries, writing research proposals, and writing technical or peer-reviewed reports and preparing and presenting oral presentations.
  • Experience addressing public inquires on fish and wildlife issues or regulatory requirements using clear oral and written communication skills (i.e., explaining complex subsistence regulations, etc.).
  • Skills in successful project management
  • Skills in cross-cultural communication and working in rural communities.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and individually with minimal supervision.

Special Note:
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Requires frequent travel to rural Alaskan communities for 1-2 weeks at a time, multiple times per year for fieldwork and other meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

Subsistence Resource Specialist 2
A Bachelor's degree in anthropology, sociology, geography, or a closely related field.
AND
One year of experience performing professional subsistence resource research at the entry level. This experience is equivalent to Subsistence Resource Specialist 1 with the State of Alaska.
Special Note:
Research may be on subsistence issues, for baseline studies of resource use, the impact of regional industrial growth on subsistence uses or, the development of fishing and hunting regulations.
Subsistence Resource Specialist 3
A Bachelor's degree in anthropology, sociology, geography or closely related field.
AND
Three years of professional experience performing subsistence studies and/or research including two years at the journey level. This specific experience is equivalent to a Subsistence Resource Specialist 2 with the State of Alaska.
Substitution: A Master's degree as described above will substitute for one year of the nonspecific experience.
Special Note:
Research may address subsistence issues, baseline studies of wildlife uses, the impact of regional and industrial growth on subsistence uses and, the development of fish and hunting regulations.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 2 or 3 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at level 2, promotion to level 3 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
