State of Alaska is Hiring a MAINTENANCE GENERALIST SUB-JOURNEY 1 Near Palmer, AK

The Division of Agriculture, Plant Materials Center is seeking a motivated and career-oriented individual who works well independently as well as with a team to fill our Maintenance Generalist, Sub-Journey 1 position. We offer a beautiful work location in an agricultural setting with stunning views of Pioneer Peak.
Mission and Culture
The Plant Materials Center is a research agriculture facility that provides foundation seed, disease-free seed potatoes, certified seed testing, reclamation/re-vegetation procedures, etc., for a wide variety of people and agencies. This position provides the ground work in the seed production fields and greenhouses, assists with seed cleaning and conditioning, and performs light building maintenance. It functions at an entry-level and works under direct supervision.
Core Responsibilities
Operate various gasoline, electric, and hand tools and John Deere lawn equipment to perform a number of ground and building maintenance tasks. Assist Agronomists, Natural Resource Specialists, and Technicians in seed production tasks, i.e., unloading and cleaning of harvesters; drying, transferring, and storing of seed; assisting in cleaning and conditioning seed; cleaning seed separating equipment. Assist Agronomists, Natural Resource Specialists, and Technicians, supervised and unsupervised, in off-site or remote reclamation, re-vegetation projects, and seed collection projects, i.e., ground preparation/scarification, spreading seed and fertilizer on selective re-vegetation sites or whole reclamation sites.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
Alaska Plant Materials Center is a 400-acre agricultural farm near Palmer in Butte, Alaska. It was established to promote the state’s agricultural industry.
Who We Are Looking For
We seek a motivated and career-oriented individual who would like to join our team at the Plant Materials Center. Our ideal candidate would value teamwork as well as be able to work independently in an agricultural setting. We are seeking applicants with the following strengths:
  • Support Agronomist and lead Technician in day-to-day operations of seed conditioning & seed cleaning.
  • Under general supervision, perform field and greenhouse grounds work — transplants a wide variety of crops, both mechanically and hand-plant.
  • Setting up and maintaining large wheel move, hand move, mainline automated micro-drip and misting irrigation systems.
  • Rogueing fields and greenhouse crops to remove contaminated plants or noxious weeds from all rows, pots, and fields requires the employee to know what a multitude of plants look like in various stages of development.
  • Spraying pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides to control various weeds and pests.

Minimum Qualifications
