The Department of Public Safety (DPS), Division of Alaska State Troopers, are currently recruiting to fill Forensic Technician 1/2 flex positions located in Soldotna, Palmer, and Bethel.Soldotna/Palmer Salary: Forensic Tech 1 = $23.31 per hour / Forensic Tech 2 = $26.61 per hourBethel Salary = Forensic Tech 1 = $34.97 per hour / Forensic Tech 2 = $39.92 per hourWHAT YOU WILL BE DOING: Under direct supervision and guidance, the Forensic Technician 1 will learn the technical duties involving crime scene processing. Incumbent will learn to function with a high degree of independence and will work assigned less complex technical assignments and will assist with crime scene response, attend court hearings to learn expert witness testimony in crime scene processing.A Forensic Technician 2 possesses journey level expertise and demonstrates competency in higher technical duties involving crime scene processing. Incumbents exercise a higher degree of independence and are assigned more complex technical assignments to include high profile crime scene response, potential lead responsibility at crime scenes, appearing in court as an expert witness in crime scene processing, and may train lower level Forensic Technicians. THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT: Palmer - This position will perform out of Palmer, Alaska. The daily work environment consists of a small team of task-driven individuals. Incumbent will work closely with team members to support the mission.Soldotna - This position is situated inside a secure law enforcement building in Soldotna. The office environment includes administrative professionals, commissioned staff, and criminal intelligence professionals.Bethel - This position is located and works full-time out of the Alaska State Trooper post located in Bethel, Alaska. The work environment is friendly, team oriented and productive. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Forensic Technician 1An Associate of Science degree from an accredited college in criminalistics, criminology, or a natural or physical science.ORTwo years of post-secondary education from an accredited college that includes at least 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours in physical science courses such as chemistry, biology, physics, or criminalistics that included laboratory work.Substitution: Paraprofessional laboratory experience involving any combination of: the receipt, preparation, and disposal of specimens for testing; conducting routine tests; maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment; performing quality control on equipment, solutions, and reagents; and maintaining operational supplies and materials may substitute for the requisite education on a month-to-month basis (1 month experience equals 2.67 semester or 4 quarter hours). Forensic Technician 2The successful completion of the Forensic Technician 1 flexible training criteria.Or substitution: An Associate of Science degree from an accredited college in criminalistics, criminology, or a natural or physical science.AndOne year of technical experience identifying, collecting, documenting, and preserving physical evidence left at the crime scene for a law enforcement agency or crime laboratory.Or substitution: Two years of postsecondary education from an accredited college that included 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours in physical science courses such as chemistry, biology, physics, or criminalistics that included laboratory workAndOne year of technical experience identifying, collecting, documenting, and preserving physical evidence left at the crime scene for a law enforcement agency or crime laboratory
