The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 3 located in Juneau or Ketchikan!
What you will be doing:
The Department of Fish and Game, Commercial Fisheries Division is seeking to hire a Fishery Biologist 3 to serve as the Southeast Alaska Commercial Fisheries Port Sampling Program Supervisor. The job will mainly consist of directing and supporting fishery biologists and technicians in sampling commercially harvested salmon and shellfish landings as they occur at commercial seafood processors in Southeast Alaska. The port sampling program supervisor will be required to interact with managers, researchers, commercial fishermen, processing plant workers and other ADF&G staff. The person filling this position directly supervises 4 flexibly staffed Fishery Biologist ½’s and may supervise 1-3 seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician's. The incumbent is responsible for hiring and training these individuals and providing timely evaluations. The incumbent can expect to work some irregular hours depending on the dynamics of the fisheries and staff needs.

This position is part time, working 15-29.75 hours per week. This port sampling supervisor position directs the collection of biological data from commercial salmon and shellfish landing in Southeast Alaska. Data collections consist of, but are not limited to coded wire tags, fishery performance, pink sex ratios, age-length data, otoliths, genetic samples, morphometric and other biological data as directed. This information is used directly to manage State of Alaska fisheries. Some of our work is conducted as part of the Pacific Salmon Treaty and is considered the foundation on which the salmon management of Southeast Alaska is built. The successful candidate will also learn to manage budgets, prepare project progress reports and submit grant applications.

The working environment you can expect:Most of the daily work of this position is performed in an office setting. If assisting in sampling there may be occasions where work is performed on docks and in the processing plants in Southeast Alaska often in cold, slippery, and wet conditions, working around moving parts and heavy equipment.

- Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently with remote supervision.
- Experience collecting biological data from commercial landings of salmon and shellfish.
- Experience using electronic data collection applications and hardware.

Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of full performance professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Fish Culturist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
- at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
- at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note:
"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
