State of Alaska is Hiring a Fishery Biologist 1/2 Near Fairbanks, AK

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 1/2 located in Fairbanks!
What you will be doing:
The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a 10-month seasonal Fishery Biologist 1 located in Fairbanks, Alaska (Region III).
The primary duty of this position is to oversee and coordinate one to two salmon counting towers located on the Chena and Salcha Rivers in addition to assisting with other fisheries research projects in Region III and take on planning of other anadromous species research projects as available after flexing to the Fishery Biologist 2 position. At the Fishery Biologist 1 level, the incumbent for this position will be responsible for overseeing operations of up to two counting towers and associated sonar and carcass sampling portions of the projects. Duties include disseminating data daily, planning and budgeting, executing field research, performing data analysis, producing fisheries data series (FDS) and other reports documenting the project and leading Fish and Wildlife Technician 2s and 3s. This position will be supervised by a Fishery Biologist 3.
The key responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Running all facets of assigned research projects including designing and writing operational plans, developing and maintaining budgets, preparing equipment and supplies for field work, executing data collection in the field, analyzing data and interpreting results, and producing appropriate reports.
  • Ensuring all contractual obligations and reporting requirements are met;
  • Working with biometric staff to ensure projects are designed so they may be analyzed in a statistically sound manner;
  • Monitoring fishery research projects to ensure data are collected in accordance with operational plans, and if necessary, adjusting equipment placement, and personnel schedules as needed to ensure accurate research data and results;
  • Leading field technicians; and,
Assisting fisheries biologist 1, 2 and 3's on projects as assigned.

The incumbent will be part of a research team that designs and implements research projects that help managers make decisions that sustain or improve the state’s sport fisheries for all stakeholders. The incumbent will help provide a direct data piece in the Yukon River Chinook Salmon puzzle.
The working environment you can expect:
The position is located in Fairbanks, Alaska. At the Fishery Biologist 1 level, the incumbent will be responsible for planning and implementing 1-2 research projects annually. At the Fishery Biologist 2 level, the incumbent will be responsible for planning and implementing up to 3 projects annually. The resulting information will be used by managers to make decisions that ensure sustainable sport fisheries.

  • Demonstrated ability to process data, interpret output and summarize results within allotted budgets and project timelines;

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing technical/scientific information in a logical and effective manner;
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Region III resident sport fisheries.

Minimum Qualifications

Fishery Biologist 1
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
  • at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
  • at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

Special Note:
"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.


Fishery Biologist 2
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 1, Fish Culturist 1, Wildlife Biologist 1, or Habitat Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitutions:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
  • at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
  • at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
A master's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management, will substitute for the required year of professional level biologist experience. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 1 or 2 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level 1, promotion to the Level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
