The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3/4 located in Anchorage!

What you will be doing:
This flexibly staffed position allows for appointment at a level commensurate with training and experience and has the opportunity to be promoted within the same position after gaining the required training and experience. At the tech 4 level, this position will independently perform assigned duties critical to genetics lab operations such as electronic and physical project setup, DNA extractions and purification, database management, archiving DNA and samples, and lab supplies inventory. The ideal candidate has demonstrated organizational skills, ability to handle multiple competing deadlines, and attention to detail. This team member must work closely with a diverse group of other GCL staff to accomplish project objectives and deadlines.

The Gene Conservation Laboratory (GCL) is a section of the Division of Commercial Fisheries within the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G). The GCL utilizes genetic principles and tools to support the management of commercially important fish, shellfish, and aquatic plant species in Alaska based on the sustained yield principle. The GCL is committed to providing high-quality and relevant data that directly supports ADF&G's mission, and the lab is respected and recognized within the Department and by the public as a premier laboratory. This position is critical in supporting the GCL's mission by providing lab management for genetic projects used to address management questions across the state.

The working environment you can expect:
The Fish and Wildlife Tech 3 /4 position is based in Anchorage at the Gene Conservation Lab (GCL). The GCL is a high-throughput, state-of-the-art genetics lab that collaborates with other labs worldwide. This dynamic position requires computer work, lab work, respectful interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and sound decision-making.

Who we are looking for:
  • Knowledge and experience performing routine data manipulation and data entry using the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge and experience with laboratory methods and using electronic pipettes and centrifuges.
  • Knowledge and experience initiating supply purchases and maintaining inventories for tissues and DNA archive plates.
  • Knowledge and experience coordinating and tracking multiple projects to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge and experience in shipping and receiving sampling supplies, biological samples, and hazardous materials.

Minimum Qualifications

Fish and Wildlife Technician 3:
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.

Fish and Wildlife Technician 4:
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
One year of experience as a journey level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 3.
OR
Four years of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 3 or 4 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level 3, promotion to the Level 4 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
