State of Alaska is Hiring a Director, Tax Division Near Anchorage, AK

State of Alaska’s Department of Revenue
is seeking an innovative leader to lead the Tax Division
As Director, you will be responsible for departmental oversight of collection of oil and gas severance taxes, corporate income taxes, fisheries business taxes, and a variety of excise taxes. You will lead the agency’s 100-person division, made up of tax, audit, economic research, administrative, and IT professionals. The Tax Director is a partially exempt position that reports directly to the Commissioner of the Department of Revenue and the post of duty is in the Atwood building in Anchorage, Alaska.
The Director formulates rules, regulations, policies, and program recommendations for the division. This position is also responsible for exercising internal control over the expenditure of state program funds. The Tax Division is responsible for revenue forecasting and development of state tax and fiscal policy and oversees the State’s charitable gaming program.
In addition to tax functions, the Director is responsible and accountable for the planning, budgeting, staffing and operation of the division and has substantial responsibility for the determination of policy and for the way in which policies are carried out as they pertain to tax administration.
This is an executive appointment position that carries an expectation of high-level internal and external communication skills that will positively represent the Department of Revenue and its mission. During regular legislative sessions, the Director will regularly interact with legislators and their staff regarding the departmental budget. The effective incumbent will be comfortable with those interactions and discerning enough to know when to defer to the Commissioner's Office for additional guidance or clarification.
The preferred applicant should have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Oil and gas tax and/or industry experience
  • Be able to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with industry, community organizations, and the legislature
  • Be an effective and empowering leader for the division
  • Speak effectively before public groups and legislative committees
  • Analyze problems and develop solutions
  • Function independently
A strong candidate will be collaborative in nature, but outspoken when it comes to representing the department’s interests.
A Bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, accounting, finance, economics or a related field is required. Previous supervisory experience and a CPA, MBA or Law Degree is preferred. To apply, interested applicants should email the following documents to DOR Human Resources:
