Stamford Public Schools is Hiring an Assistant Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment - Secondary (6-12) Near Stamford, CT

The filling of this position is based upon continued funding in the Board of Education budget.

Note: Teachers dually certified in TESOL, Bilingual Education or ESL, with experience in Sheltered Instruction or fluency in a language other than English, will be given preference for all Stamford Public School positions.


General Statement:
The Assistant Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment - Secondary (6-12) will support the design and implementation for the curriculum philosophy framework for all secondary content areas. This includes the development process for creating, adjusting, and monitoring the implementation of curriculum, ensuring the identification of research based high-leverage instructional practices by content-area and grade level. The position is accountable for supporting the alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessments district-wide.

The Assistant Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment - Secondary (6-12) reports to the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment - Secondary 6 - 12.


Major Responsibilities:

Lead and manage all aspects of the following areas:
  1. Curriculum Development and Implementation (70%)
  1. Supports the Design of Curriculum Development Procedures – Collaborates with Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment - Secondary to support the development of district curriculum philosophy and alignment with the ongoing curriculum audit’s recommendations; works with Content Area Teams in the development of curriculum design framework (standards; power standards), vets curriculum units to be shared across the district, collaborates to design framework and curriculum templates; supports e-platform for sharing of units across the district; ensures that technology is integrated with curriculum resources; ensures the horizontal and vertical curriculum alignment for 6 - 12; works with Content Area Teams to develop rubrics that outline requirements for successful response on curriculum-aligned assessments;
  1. Supports the Implementation of Research Based High Leverage Instructional Strategies and Materials – Supports the use of high leverage instructional strategies to ensure equitable and increased access to rigorous curriculum at the 6 - 12 level. Supports the identification of high leverage research based instructional practices by subject area and the components to be included in content lessons, establishes research based high-leverage instructional strategies aligned to the CT Core Standards, Standards for Mathematical Practices, and NGSS, determines expectations for lesson design; collaborates to determine level and rigor of instruction expectations; plans for differentiated instruction.
  1. Supports the Implementation of Assessment Practices – Collaborates with Teaching and Learning Team to determine the Stamford Public School Assessment Calendar, supports central office and building administration for all assessments including PSAT, SAT, NGSS and universal screeners such as Math Inventory, collects and analyzes data to be shared with Teaching and Learning and Building Administration Teams to inform instruction and ongoing professional development.
  1. Collaborates with District Content Leaders and Secondary Department Heads in choosing research based high-leverage instructional strategies and materials, and provides professional development and resources to teachers in curriculum design, implementation, and research based high-leverage instructional strategies.
  1. Tier 1, 2, and 3 Instruction and Intervention – Collaborates with the TOSA for Tiered Support K-12 to develop a philosophy for implementation for progress monitoring to ensure the alignment of Tier 1 instruction with Tier 2 and Tier 3 instruction and interventions for 6-12.
  1. Develops Support Plan for New Teachers – Identifies curriculum, instruction, and professional development needs for all new 6 -12 teachers.
  1. Develops Professional Development – Identifies curriculum, instruction, and professional development needs for all 6-12 teachers throughout the year.
  1. Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Evaluation and Development (20%)
  1. Program Evaluation – Collaborates with the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment - Secondary to help prioritize support areas needed for curriculum, assessment, and instruction; to determine data to be collected and analyzed for student achievement, and to gather ongoing feedback to ensure continuous program improvement.
  1. Other Duties (10%)
  1. Coordinates with Board of Education departments, including but not limited to Teaching and Learning, Intervention and Support Services, and School Development.
  1. Collaborates with the Assistant Director for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment - Elementary, the Assistant Directors for Special Education, Coordinator of Technology Integration, Coordinator of College and Career Readiness/School Counseling Service and the Coordinator for English Learners to ensure vertical alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  1. Chairs and participates in committees as requested by the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment - Secondary.
  1. Performs additional duties as assigned including but not limited to supporting the following:
    1. Building Administration
    2. 6-12 Classroom Teachers
    3. Department Heads
    4. District Content Leaders
  1. Supervises the following:
  1. Support staff as required.

  • Ability to collaborate as part of an integrated team and develop a collegial environment within the school to support all students.
  • Knowledge of learning theory, program implementation, best practices in curriculum and instruction, and assessment processes.
  • Experience identifying professional development needs for all teachers; develops content and professional development for 6 - 12 newly hired teachers throughout the year.
  • Use of data-driven decision making to determine effectiveness of programs and initiatives.
  • Excellent conceptual, analytical, problem solving, organization, and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, policies, and procedures related to public schools, specifically related to Special Education, English Learners, and related services.
  • Knowledge, understanding, and experience with 6 -12 District initiatives.
  • Understanding of English Learner instructional strategies, intervention strategies, and cognitive coaching.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize information, develop and monitor a plan, and produce data-focused reports in collaboration with the Research Department.
  • Experience and skill in delivering professional development of research based, high-leverage instructional strategies.
  • Knowledge of budget development/administration and understanding financial resources.
  • Self-directed with attention to detail and excellent time management skills.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and a proven track record of working collaboratively with multiple and diverse constituencies.
  • High standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity.
  • Knowledge of and/or demonstrate the ability to learn and implement Operating Systems (i.e. Windows); Office suites (i.e. Microsoft Office, Google Docs); Presentation Software (i.e. PowerPoint, Keynote); Spreadsheets (i.e. Excel, Google Spreadsheets); Communication and Collaboration tools (i.e. Skype); Accounting Software (i.e. QuickBooks); Student Information Systems (i.e. Naviance, Power School); or any other technology deemed relevant for this position.
Qualifications:
  • CT CSDE Intermediate Administration or Supervision certification (092).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a position relating to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development
  • Experience in an urban district, preferred.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Stamford Board of Education may find appropriate.
