Tobacco Prevention & Control Epidemiologist in Augusta, MEOverviewProvide an overview of the work, briefly summarizing the job, the main purpose, the objectives, and the results expected. The Maine CDC’s Tobacco Prevention and Control Team within the Tobacco and Substance Use Prevention and Control (TSUPC) Program is responsible for the oversight and management of Maine’s Tobacco Prevention & Control efforts, including, but not limited to treatment, prevention, and enforcement.This position is responsible for conducting public health surveillance of Tobacco Prevention &Control. You will develop, and manage Statewide Tobacco Prevention & Control surveillancesystems, and analyze data related to Tobacco Prevention & Control interventions. This positionassists with meeting the surveillance and evaluations requirements of federal grants. You willparticipate in workgroups with the Department, its partners and stakeholders.Knowledge, Skills and CertificationsA Master’s Degree in Epidemiology or closely related field or a Bachelor’s Degree in Epidemiologyor closely related field and two (2) years professional experience in epidemiology. Equivalent relatedexperience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.Preferred candidates will also have:• Principles and practices of epidemiology and public health surveillance.• Experience with data collection and reporting for federal grants.• Experience using data to inform program and policy efforts.• Knowledge and experience with Tobacco Prevention & Control, and state and national datasources.• The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group ofinternal and external partners.• Excellent oral and written communication skills.• Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Tableau and statistical software (i.e. SAS orSPSS).• Extensive database skills including creation, management, and integration of diversedatasets.• Knowledge and experience with drafting technical Tobacco Prevention & Control informationfor the Department, its partners and the public.DHHS LONG-TERM CONT-STAFF DO 5• Ability to organize/prioritize the needs to the Tobacco Prevention & Control Program.Duties and Deliverable – Outline of specific job duties:Identify specific duties required of the resource, as well as any expected deliverables. Includenecessary travel expectations in this section.This position will work as an embedded member of the Tobacco Prevention & Control Program atthe Maine CDC. The position will work closely with the Tobacco Prevention & Control staff, theTobacco and Substance Use Prevention and Control (TSUPC) Program, other Maine CDC staff,work groups, and other contracted staff. The position will perform Tobacco Epidemiological services as requested by the program.Tobacco Epidemiological services performed by this role, include, but are not limited to:• Collect, analyze, interpret, and disseminate data relevant to the Tobacco Prevention &Control Program.• Collaborate with Tobacco and Substance Use Prevention and Control Programs, other MaineCDC Programs, stakeholders and/or program vendors.• Provide professional consultation to programs and Department partners.• Monitor tobacco-related trends and emerging threats.• Provide input to Tobacco Prevention & Control initiatives based on surveillance andevaluation.• Assist the Program Manager with grant writing.• Create data briefs and visualizations for the Tobacco Prevention & Control Program, itsstakeholders and/or vendors.• Act as the point of contact for the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS),Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey (MIYHS), and Pregnancy Risk Assessment MonitoringSystem (PRAMS), and the SEOW dashboard.• Develop an annual and/or five-year surveillance plan.• Assist Program Manager with required federal grant reporting requirements.• Represent the program at in and out of State meetings, conferences, trainings and workshopsas it relates to epidemiological expertise.• Analyze tobacco-related disparities and the linkage between tobacco usage and chronicdiseases.• Other duties as assigned.In-State Travel: Up to 5% in-state travel is anticipated. In-state travel may include local, regional, or state meetings. Occasionally, due to geographic distance, this may result in the need for overnight travel. Travel reimbursement for routine business will need approval of the Department ProgramManager. Reimbursement to the employee shall be in accordance with current Statepolicies/procedures vs. via Provider.Out-of-state travel: Limited opportunities may be available for staff to attend conferences, meetings, education and/or training events. Travel reimbursement for out-of-state travel will need approval of the Department Program Manager and the Department of Health and Human Services Reimbursement.
