St Thomas University is Hiring an Assistant Dean for Career Development Near Miami, FL

Summary

As a member of the Dean’s Leadership Team, the Assistant Dean for Career Development provides leadership, management, and directs student and alumni services in the area of career services. The Assistant Dean is a high-profile position, representing St. Thomas University College of Law with important external constituencies including local, regional, and national legal communities, prospective students, potential employers, alumni and the public. This will include developing and implementing targeted outreach and engagement strategies to facilitate quality employment opportunities for graduates of STU Law. The Assistant Dean is responsible for the overall administration and organization of the College of Law's Office for Career Development. The Assistant Dean must stay apprised of legal career trends and the evolving job market and develop new career and professional development initiatives.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the Career Development team is fully staffed and supported by a positive culture that is highly inclusive, creative, and high performing.
  • Conduct regular assessments of current strategies, processes, and procedures; present the Dean with findings and recommendations.
  • Formulate and execute innovative strategies for supporting the unique career planning needs of each STU Law student.
  • Develop student and office policies and procedures relating to career development issues and trends.
  • Coach, manage and support Career Development staff; structure roles and responsibilities in response to market needs.
  • Manage office budget and monitor all expenditures.
  • Provide guidance and counseling for students and alumni.
  • Administer a variety of workshops and programs.
  • Provide library and web-based resources, including online job listings and
  • newsletters for students.
  • Administer mentoring and interview programs.
  • External Relationship Development and Stewardship:
  • Develop and steward relationships with hiring managers at large and boutique
  • law firms, corporations, government agencies, and other potential employers
  • to cultivate expanded legal employment opportunities.
  • Attend relevant community events, on a local, regional, and national basis.
  • Respond to employer hiring enquiries, connecting them with qualified STU
  • Law students, recent graduates, and alumni.
  • Assist our candidates in preparation for the application and interview process.
  • Attend alumni and student receptions throughout the state of Florida.
  • Serve as liaison to various groups including (NALP) National Association for Law Placement, the (ABA) American Bar Association, (AALS) Association of American Law Schools, employers, recruiters, bar associations, and national law placement consortia; serve on career-related committees.
  • Attend regional and national conferences, programs, and panels to keep current on issues related to legal employment; develop presentations and moderate panels.
  • Obtain, evaluate, and synthesize information about legal employers and employment opportunities nationwide.
  • Recruitment Programs, Data Reporting and Statistical Analytics:
  • Responsible for on-campus and off-campus recruitment programs.
  • Oversee resume collection process. Gather and review job postings. Maintain and analyze data on participating employers, interviews, and trends.
  • Oversee employment data tracking, collection, reporting and, where relevant, publication, under complex and multiple reporting regimes (ABA, NALP, US News).
  • Collect and track self-reported data from graduates.
  • Review requirements of each reporting regime annually to ensure compliance with updated standards.

Requirements:

  • JD from an ABA accredited law school.
  • 5 years of experience in academic career services, legal practice or judicial clerkship experience.
  • Good standing with the Florida bar or another state bar.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong supervisory, organizational, and administrative skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills sufficient to inspire and work effectively with diverse groups of students, faculty, alumni, members of the bar, and legal employers.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to conceive and execute a strategic vision for the Office for Career Development.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Ability to use computer programs such as Simplicity, OSCAR, and any other program used by the Office for Career Development.
