St. Stephen Lutheran Preschool is Hiring a Preschool Director Near Williamsburg, VA

**Ideal candidate would be able to start Summer of 2024, pending both criminal background and central registry checks**

Compensation: $24,000 - $28,000 (9-Month Salary); Flex Hourly Pay over Summer Break

Job Type: Part Time, roughly 8 AM - 1 PM, with some extra meetings

Benefits: Spring and Christmas Breaks (1 week each) and 5 Personal Days, Flex Hours over Summer Break

Reports To: Pastor Jon Nelson as designee of Church Council and the Preschool Committee

Supervises: Teaching Staff and Aides

We are looking for someone with a passion for early childhood education to continue a tradition of excellence for a program that is looking forward to its 60th anniversary in 2025, serving families in Williamsburg and surrounding communities. Begun in 1965, today we serve approximately 50 children between 3 and 5 years old, 45 weeks a year, Mon-Fri from 9AM until 2PM.

This preschool is a ministry of St Stephen Lutheran Church, an ELCA congregation. We strive to be an open, welcoming, and affirming congregation. Located directly across from the College of William & Mary, our community also understands the importance of education and the value of enriching young minds in a safe and loving environment. The ideal candidate will have an active faith life and be open and respectful of a broad range of faith traditions and family backgrounds. Membership or regular attendance at St. Stephen is not required, but certainly welcome.

Administrative resources to process tuition payments and payroll support this part time position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the implementation of our curriculum
  • Ensure compliance with all local and state regulations and standards
  • Communicate regularly with parents by email, phone, social media, and newsletters
  • Assist with, and participate in, regular “spirit events” to facilitate community interaction
  • Meet with church staff weekly and preschool committee monthly (one evening per month, approximately 2 hours or less)
  • Lead and assist staff in the operation of the preschool, including day-to-day and special events
  • Promote professional development
  • Monitor staff performance and coach improvement; conduct annual evaluations
  • Work with the preschool committee to support and promote the preschool program as well as facilitate healthy relationships among staff, parents, and congregation
  • Work with church financial team to facilitate payroll and financial reports and/or reconciliations
  • Make hiring recommendations for teachers and assistants to the preschool committee
  • Adhere to the operational budget when requisitioning equipment and supplies
  • Teach and monitor children as needed, including acting as a replacement or substitute teacher as required by available personnel
  • Prepare documents for the welcome packet to be sent out to families prior to the start of the year
  • Prepare materials for the teachers/preschool prior to the start of the year such as student name labels, student car signs, teacher handbooks, etc.
  • Separate and prepare Scholastic catalogs for students and distribute in student mailboxes
  • Track extended day and before care usage in ProCare prior to billing cycles each month
  • Conduct school tours for and send information packages to families of prospective students
  • Coordinate all enrollment information
  • Maintain record of students’ information: parents’ names, addresses, phone numbers, emergency numbers utilizing ProCare Database
  • Prepare and mail correspondence to current or potential families or others deemed necessary
  • Publish monthly newsletter and notices for parents as well as an annual information booklet for each new school year
  • Establish and maintain confidential files and records, including time cards of hourly staff
  • Submit staff time-sheets in a timely manner as outlined by the church financial team

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required (emphasis in childcare, child development, early childhood or elementary education preferred)
  • Experience in a preschool or childcare setting
  • Passion for early-childhood education
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to young children, teachers, helpers, and parents
  • Strong organizational and managerial skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage a budget and understand financial statements
  • Up to date on all vaccinations
  • State required background checks and First Aid/CPR certification

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $24,000.00 - $28,000.00 per year
