St. Matthews Pharmacy is Hiring a Pharmacist In Charge - Retail Outer Loop Near Louisville, KY

The Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) position leads a skilled pharmacy team in a fast-growing organization. The PIC is responsible for leading and directing all pharmacy activities at their location so the objectives of the company are consistently and successfully achieved.

The PIC ensures compliance with FDA mandates, accrediting body standards, and self-imposed restrictions on particular drugs, as applicable. The PIC also enforces all federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to drug dispensing and patient privacy, as well as company policies and procedures.

The Pharmacist-In-Charge reports to the Director of Systems & Retail OPS.

This is an Exempt position with pay range $125,000-$140,000 annually.

Essential Functions:

  • Recruits, hires, and directs pharmacy staff to ensure that they carry out the goals of the company. Holds employees accountable to the organization for decisions affecting consumers.
  • Assesses revenue and expenditures of store, manages utilization of resources, and works within budget constraints.
  • Conducts meetings with members of the pharmacy staff at regular intervals.
  • Arranges for performance evaluation of each member of pharmacy annually; establishes annual performance goals and monitors progress toward these goals on a consistent basis.
  • Corrects behaviors and disciplines employees, as necessary.
  • Maintains ongoing liaison with all pharmacy staff members in order to obtain their cooperation toward the achievement of the goals of the company.
  • Delegates authority as necessary to ensure that all responsibilities of this position and pharmacy operations are fulfilled in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Addresses complaints and resolves issues.
  • Performs pharmacist duties as needed.
  • Oversees the pharmacy services of the company, including monitoring internal company processes and operations.
  • Guides clinical operational aspects of the pharmacy and also guides oversight of the clinical decision-making aspects of pharmacy.
  • Verifies source of prescription
  • Contacts Physician’s offices for clarification or questions on any orders or prescriptions written by the Physician
  • Provides Clinical advice to Physicians regarding medication treatments
  • Obtains any and all information necessary from Physician to ensure accurate and safe dispensing of medications to the patient
  • Resolves prescription discrepancies
  • Receives prescription orders over the telephone from Physicians or their agents
  • Verifies correct drug is being dispensed and the drug matches the prescription order
  • Verifies correct patient for dispensing, verifies correct route of administration, verifies correct drug dosage and strength, verifies correct administration schedule or time (directions)
  • Includes appropriate manufacturer or other patient education materials with dispensed drugs)
  • Obtains insurance authorizations as required
  • Investigates and manages insurance denials as required
  • Completes quality control and DUR check on prescriptions, ensuring adherence to all policies, procedures and laws
  • Provides patient-specific consultation on all aspects of their medication regimen
  • Maintains appropriate records and computer entry of prescriptions and patient information
  • Documents patient interventions with adequate detail in both clinical and non-clinical records as appropriate

Oversight of Pharmacy Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensures compliance with FDA mandates and self-imposed manufacturer restrictions on particular drugs, as applicable.
  • Enforces all federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to drug dispensing and patient privacy, as well as company policies and procedures.
  • Ensures ongoing company compliance with all laws and regulations; ensures that the company meets or exceeds accreditation standards; and implements ‘’best practices’’ in department activities.
  • Reports any misconduct, suspicious or unethical activities to the Compliance Officer.
  • Participates in surveys conducted by authorized inspection agencies. Initiates appropriate actions on reports and recommendations provided by authorized inspection agencies.
  • Participates in the company’s Performance Improvement program as requested by the Performance Improvement Coordinator.
  • Participates in company committees when requested.
  • Reviews incidents and resolves complaints.

Additional Duties:

  • Remains dependable and maintains levels of confidentiality
  • Ensures that patient rights are upheld and supports informed decision making by the patient
  • Establishes and maintains effective professional relationships with prescribers
  • All other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited college of pharmacy or Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) Certification.
  • State Licensure in the resident state of the pharmacy, Kentucky, as well as State Licensure at the time of hire (or obtained within 12 months of hire date) for IN, OH, TN, and additional states as needed.
  • Successful completion of state pharmacy board examination
  • Maintenance of continuing education requirements
  • 3-5 years’ experience in the practice of pharmacy, required
  • 2-3 years’ experience in pharmacy management, preferred
  • Experience dispensing medications prescribed for the treatment of addiction, preferred
  • Experience using Pioneer preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Current knowledge of all applicable federal, state, and local pharmacy laws, rules, and regulations applicable to the practice of pharmacy.
  • Familiarity with workflow concepts relating to the practice of retail pharmacy.
  • Shows full understanding of controlled substance rules and regulations as dictated by the Drug Enforcement Agency, as well as state and local laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge in counseling patients regarding the clinical benefit and use of their customized medication.
  • Expertise in understanding third party plan coverage options for customized medication patients.
  • Thorough understanding of benefits investigation and pharmacy billing operations for commercial and Medicaid/Medicare members.
  • Possesses leadership skills and abilities: time management and organizational skills; professionalism; communication skills, both oral and written; ability to prioritize effectively; and ability to delegate effectively.
  • Ability to organize and plan the activities of subordinates, and to delegate appropriately.
  • Organizational skills sufficient to maintain consistently accurate records.
  • Ability to evaluate options and to make efficient decisions.
  • Computer skills that include proficiency with spreadsheets and use of the internet, as well as word processing, and efficient use of the internet and e-mail.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires residence in the city of position offered or another nearby community that would allow for on-site presence. The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions in this job description:

  • The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit, as well as talk and hear.
  • The employee is required to use hands to operate vehicles and office equipment.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. - Heavier weights with assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Repetitive motions and/or prolonged computer use.
  • Working at a fast pace, subject to many interruptions and both physical and mental stress.

Notes: Tentative start date in June, will need to train at Retail pharmacy minimum 1 week before start date.
